Microphones used in vocal production are the initial point of contact in the recording chain. Recording voices is an excellent approach to establish your sound and an even better way to get organic samples that no other producer has. Voice-overs, podcasts, voice notes, and musical performances are all examples of voice recordings. Some microphones are better for recording instruments, while others are better for capturing vocalists. This post will assist you in narrowing down the large selection to a handful of our top mics that will do the job. Let’s take a look!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Just in case you wonder...

What are the types of mics?

– Condenser microphones are the most common kind of microphone used for acoustic or acoustic-electric instruments. They are also the most sensitive and more affordable alternative.
– Diaphrasing is an audio engineering term that refers to the undesired distortions heard in condenser recordings.

What can I do to improve the quality of my Zoom microphone?

– Make use of a high-quality audio microphone.
– Test and optimize your studio microphone.
– Stamp out the echo.
– It would be preferable if you did not stand too near to the microphone.
– Turn off sound processing if it’s bothering you.
– Ensure that you have a stable internet connection.

Why do I need a microphone?

Some people want the flexibility of using a computer recording application on their own computer, but they also want to be able to record conversations quietly without being discovered. Others choose an external microphone that can be used with a number of recording applications in order to maximize their chances of capturing a sound recording. Others want their voice to be clearly heard even if they are standing far away from a room’s or studio’s speakers.

Which is better: XLR or USB microphones?

– USB mics are mostly plug-and-play, requiring relatively little knowledge of sound. You connect it to your laptop, press the record button in the software, and you’re ready to begin. They are also affordable.
– For more advanced tasks, you’ll want to XLR microphones. This allows you to use numerous microphones simultaneously while maintaining tactile control over sound levels. However, using an XLR microphone involves the purchase of additional equipment.

AT2035

Higher-than-average maximum SPL

Our opinion:

Don’t be deceived by the AT2035’s low price. It is a high-end condenser microphone with a big diaphragm. Aside from the metal exterior, it has a unique shock mount. It has proved to be quite popular among project studios, voice-over work, and streaming services. Because of its higher-than-average maximum SPL of 148dB, -10dB pad, and switchable low-frequency roll-off, this mic can function with different sound sources in addition to speech recording.

Promising review:

Purchased the Audio Technica 2035 for my home studio. Gets a lot of use for vocals and voice over. Background in broadcasting and this mike excels for voice over and the quality is fabulous for vocals in music production. Highly recommend!

3.
TZ
Stellar X2

For warm and smooth sound

price from
$199.99
Our opinion:

TechZone (or TZ) Audio Products is a relatively unknown brand in the recording industry. The Stellar X2 is a contemporary condenser microphone with a sound that has been modified to avoid the typical “harsh treble” sound common in lower-cost condenser microphones. Users like the warm and smooth sound, saying that this tone is seldom seen in microphones at this price range. Seasoned engineers applaud the Stellar X2’s build quality, and those who opened up the mic to study the componentry are impressed.

Promising review:

I'm very happy with this mic. I've got a Shure sm7b that I've been using for a while for male vocals (singing). I still really like the Shure, but this new mic has what feels to me like a cleaner or softer or more open top end to it compared to the Shure. I definitely recommend this mic.

NT1-A

For guitars and percussion as well

price from
$229.00
Our opinion:

Since there are no switches or filters on the NT1A, you must make do with what you have. This mic stands out because of its extremely low self-noise. This low noise makes it a great vocal microphone as well as a perfect match for recording guitars and percussion. It is one of the world’s quietest studio microphones. Rode NT1A may be used for nearly any kind of voice work, both musical and non-musical. In the case of a musical recording, the voice also sits well and shines through the other instruments.

Our opinion:

A shock mount and a pop filter are included in the sE Electronics X1 S Vocal bundle. sE Electronics created a bespoke, handmade capsule for the X1 S microphone. The -10 and -20dB pads on the bespoke transformerless circuit allow for up to 160dB Maximum SPL. A switchable low cut filter has two cutoff frequencies of 80hz and 160hz. As a result, the mic is suited for usage with powerful sound sources. Finally, the microphone is housed in a tough all-metal enclosure.

I bought this upon recommendation from a friend and she was absolutely spot on. This mic has seriously upped my live streaming game with vocals that are rich and clear. You don't so much sing into this mic as allow it to effortlessly draws the sound from you. A delight to work with.

SM7B

Clear, flat, sharp sound

price from
$399.00
Our opinion:

If you have any doubts about the capabilities of this microphone, you should know that an earlier version was used to record several of Michael Jackson’s songs. It’s one of the few studio microphones that has a dedicated mount. If you want to avoid problems with mic placement or location, the SM7B is a suitable choice. This microphone produces a clear, flat, and sharp sound. When recording voices or getting creative with sampling, you may make the sound even crisper by adding some mid-range boost.

Promising review:

I love this microphone. It will definitely be in my studio forever. It is great for podcasting and recording vocals. Everyone should have this in their studio.

Electro-Voice RE20 - Best Microphone for Recording Vocals: With Variable-D
https://www.amazon.com/

7.
Electro-Voice
RE20

With Variable-D

price from
$439.95
Our opinion:

The Electro-Voice RE-20 is a large-diaphragm dynamic microphone with “Variable-D” technology that prevents it from over-emphasizing lows when used up close – in other words, it counteracts the proximity effect. This function enables crisp vocal recordings, which has increased its appeal in professional voice-over and broadcast circles. Its proximity effect attenuation allows vocalists to go up close to the mike for intimate sounding voices without overpowering the low frequencies.

Promising review:

Great build quality, great sound. Needs a fair amount of gain since it’s dynamic. Works great on male vocals or a kick drum mic. Sounds great to me.

Our opinion:

The sE Electronics T2 was developed with titanium sputtered capsule for improved transient reproduction with percussion, but it also works well with rhythmic voices such as rap. The quick transient reaction preserves details such as clear, fast vocal runs in singing, rapping, and talking. Because of the pad switch’s excellent SPL handling, it may also be utilized with forceful voices and loud drumming.

Promising review:

Neumann TLM 102

No settings to fiddle with

3  visitors like this
price from
$699.00
Our opinion:

This microphone has a large-diaphragm condenser capsule and a transformerless capacitor. This combo is more common on their higher-priced goods. The Neumann TLM 102 has a single Cardioid pattern and no other features to keep costs down. This restricts its adaptability while also making it simpler to work with since there are no settings to fiddle with. With a modest focus on the mids, it is ideal for voice recording.

Promising review:

Great vocal mic - it will need a Rycote USM-L shock mount . No polar pattern but whatever you can cut lows out in mixing stage.

Mojave Audio MA-200 - Best Microphone for Recording Vocals: Great for anything
https://reverb.com/

10.
Mojave
Audio MA-200

Great for anything

price from
$1,199.00
Our opinion:

The MA-200’s large-diaphragm produces warm, full-bodied renditions of voices and instruments without the shrillness and high-frequency grunge that may be found with current condenser microphones. Try it on lead and background vocals, voiceovers, piano, acoustic instruments, drum overheads, symphony, spot miking…pretty much anything. You’ll agree with the engineers who tested it that it resembles some of the most popular antique European microphones.
