As we all know, betta fish are not all the same. Some are born with bottomless stomachs like a tiny shark, while others are picky eaters who turn down everything you offer that might make you really distressing. To stimulate their appetites, you may try feeding them a variety of high-quality, high-protein meals. But there is one major question: what food formulation contains such a complete set of nutrients? Well, don’t worry, we’ve created a list of the Best Fish Food for Bettas, which you can find below. This list include ten fish food products that worth considering. Keep reading!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In case you don't know...

How do you know when fish are hungry?

Fish will eat as much as they need, so provide the food in little portions. They’ve had enough when they start spitting out the food. Well, you’re feeding your fish too much if there’s food left in the tank and drifting to the bottom.

What should I look for in fish food?

Ingredients to look for include krill, herring, squid, algae, spirulina, and garlic. Those ingredients, which are often less processed than any of those found in low-quality fish food, include fewer preservatives and less fat. High-quality fish foods are also richer in fiber and protein content.

When should you feed your fish?

In nature, most fish eat in the early morning and late at night. Exceptions are herbivores and omnivores that forage throughout the day, and nocturnal species. Although aquarium fish may be fed at any time of day, the ideal times are in the morning and evening.

What types of fish food are there?

The best types of fish foods for a variety of tropical fish, saltwater, and coldwater species are Dried flake foods, pellets ( sinking or floating), freeze-dried, frozen, live foods, spirulina, and seaweed, algae wafers, and homemade foods.

Our opinion:

New Life Spectrum is a natural supplement made in the United States using mussels, krill, herring, and squid. There are some additives, but they are all-natural and are used to preserve and enhance the color of your fish as well as offer vitamins and minerals that are necessary for optimum health. These ‘semi-floating’ pellets will float at the surface for a long time, enabling your betta to feed more naturally near the surface rather than sinking and forcing them to eat from the bottom, which they would not normally do.

Promising review:

Great Betta food with great nutritional value. Smaller pellets and easier for a Betta to eat. My Betta like it softened before I feed it to them. Betta fish can be picky. One of mine eats it right up and the other ne not so much. He was given bloodworm and now that is all he wants to eat. He can not have that all the time, so this is the food he will get. I feel good about this food and ultimately he will eat it. Tough Love, lol.

Freeze Dried Bloodworms

Aquatic Midge Larvae

price from

Our opinion:

These are aquatic midge larvae, which are a betta’s preferred food, therefore they’re ideal for those who are picky eaters. This item includes red mosquito larvae, a high-protein source that closely matches a betta’s natural diet. Furthermore, unlike live mosquito larvae or bloodworms, this product has been freeze-dried, so there is no danger of transmitting potentially deadly bacteria or parasites.

Promising review:

This jar is a HUGE amount of blood worms. Fantastic value, especially when compared to the stuff you get at your local pet store. All my fish go crazy for this stuff.

Freeze Dried Brine Shrimp

Freeze-Dried Pellets

Our opinion:

Since it is freeze-dried, it does not carry the danger of disease or parasites as living foods do, and SFBB tests the food for health and safety. Excellent as the primary food source for bettas, but also as a treat or supplement for variety if you like to give pellets every day. You should only feed a small quantity around the size of your fish’s eyeball twice a day, according to the instructions, and remove any uneaten food 3 minutes later to prevent contaminating your tank.

Promising review:

All natural, good source of protein for hermit crabs. They will enjoy this with other freeze dried foods like blood worms and baby shrimp. Trusted brand, good prices!

BettaMin Select-A-Food

All in One Types of Food

Our opinion:

Bettas (and other animals) need and want variety in their diets, which Tetra’s BettaMin Select-A-Food Variety Pack provides. Rather than buying three different bottles of food—flakes, pellets, and treats—you may purchase them all in this one container. You can dial the top of the canister one way or the other so that when you pour it, you only get the kind of food you desire. This is very handy, and it guarantees that you always have choices on hand in case your betta needs a different kind of food or if you just want to mix things up.

Promising review:

I bought this for my betta fishes (I have 3 Bettas and 6 guppies) a bit more variety in their diet. I wasn't sure about the brine shrimp since I've never given it to my bettas before but they love it! Even the guppies join in on the action. And the flakes are small enough that my bettas can just eat it in one bite. It is also mixed in with mini pellets that are different than the other ones provided but my bettas still love it. It's a great value and a lot of food so I won't be purchasing betta food for awhile!

Natural Attractants Food

price from
$14.99
Our opinion:

If you have a fussy betta, blood worms or other live-looking food will generally suffice, but they should only be used as treats. So, what are your options? Well, this Betta Pro is here for you. These pellets include all of the nutrients that bettas need in their diet, but they also contain “natural attractants” that entice the betta to overcome his pickiness and devour them.

Promising review:

Bigger bottle than I expected, good value. My bettas both love it, and they are each very picky. ( don't worry, they are in separate fish bowls ) It comes with a convenient scoop, useful for taking care with serving size. After two previous fish food purchases which my bettas refused to eat, I am very happy my fish are happy now!

Tetra
TetraMin Nutritionally Balanced Tropical Flake Food

Rich in Antioxidants Formulation

price from
$9.95
Our opinion:

As the name implies, TetraMin’s Nutritionally Balanced Tropical Flake Food is ideal for warm-water fish like bettas. It contains antioxidants to assist in your fish’s health, protein to help it grow larger and remain strong and active, and even prebiotics to assist in your betta’s digestion of all of its food. These fish flakes are also made to protect the water in your aquarium clean. While uneaten food should be removed after a few minutes, these flakes should not contaminate your tank if you follow the package’s instructions.

Promising review:

This flake is the right thickness for platy size fish including the babies. Tetra Min is high on the list of flakes my fish prefer and they always gobble them up. They stay on top the water long enough for the fish to eat them which results in a cleaner tank with less food waste.

Baby Shrimp Sun Dried Treat

Excellent Tiny Shrimp

price from
$2.26
Our opinion:

While some treats are only intended to pique your betta’s interest in food or provide fun, these tiny shrimp really aid in food digestion. This is due to the roughage provided by their shells. They may also assist to bring out the vivid colors in your betta, particularly if it’s red, orange, or pink. These should be used just two or three times each week. When you do feed them to your betta, though, they provide a lot of health benefits for him.

Promising review:

Used this to feed a beta. At first it is afraid of eating it because it's not his usual pellet but he now is looking forward it. He dance around when he see me knowing I came to feed him. He is no longer enthusiastic with the pellets. He loves eating the shrimp.

BloodWorms Freeze-Dried Food

Our opinion:

Tetra Blood Worms Freeze-Dried Treats come in a large container that will last a long time (even if blood worms should only be an occasional treat). They’re also treated specifically to keep any potentially harmful organisms or chemicals out of the treats, allowing your betta fish to enjoy them safely. This wiggly-looking snack not only stimulates your betta’s fighting instincts, making him feel fierce and bright, but it also adds nutrients and boosts his energy level.

Promising review:

Betta fish are carnivores and need meat. These are a good size for them and my betta loves munching on them 3 times a week. Its a good treat but I also think I could probably feed them daily to him and be fine. My students love getting pinches of these worms and dropping them in the tank for the fish to chomp on.

Our opinion:

If flakes aren’t your betta’s style, betta food pellets are a good alternative. One of the greatest things about these pellets is that they float (with the exception of a few that prefer to do their own thing). You can readily observe how much your betta has eaten and scoop out any leftovers this way. This means you can keep your tank clean and check your fish’s nutrition.

Promising review:

These will last you a very long time for your beta. I ordered these because I was running out and was worried I wouldn’t be able to buy more during lock down. My beta has only ever eaten these pellets and I love them because unlike the flakes they will stay floating and I don’t have to worry about any rotting at the bottom of his tank

Betta Food

Essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 Formulation

price from

Our opinion:

These betta flakes are made from wild salmon, which not only feeds your betta with essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids but also helps to bring out the colors of your betta, making them even more attractive. On a practical level, these fish flakes beat many other betta fish flakes on the market since they do not pollute your betta’s tank. They include less starch than other kinds, resulting in less mess when your fish eliminates them later.

Promising review:

I bought betta pellets and noticed my fish seemed to be having difficulty eating them so I read the reviews and decided on this food. My betta no longer has any problems eating. He waits for feeding time now. Flakes were the way to go for my fish. Doesn't cloud the water and are small flakes. Better than feeding them the cheap generic flakes.
