The batteries are harmed by cold temperatures. Batteries eventually explode and cause damage. Yale has a backup battery mechanism built into all of their smart locks, which is rather astounding. A 12-volt battery is all you need to power your Yale smart lock from the outside. This lock also has manual buttons that will not fail you in the cold unless the lock is expected to be covered in ice. Although they are watertight, pushing buttons on an ice-covered lock is quite difficult.

Works great. I purchased two and one required me to drill a larger hole in the door. Other than having to buy a hole saw it was fairly simple. They work great as long as the door closes securely. I have to give my door a slight tug to allow the lock to close completely but that’s the door and not the lock mechanism. Programming is easy.
