It extends the wireless range by using a Z-Wave 500 chipset within the lock. For larger rental properties, this is the ideal smart lock. With 30 user access credentials, it’s more than enough for any Airbnb or holiday rental home. Once the visitor has checked out, remove the access code you gave to them. Guests will enjoy the convenience of keyless access via the back-lit keypad in low-light circumstances. After 30 seconds, the door automatically locks.

"This is the primary entrance lock for our beach house that we rent. It is tied into the Vera Plus controller in that house. That house is 70 miles away and a local management company is in charge of it, but like ALL property management companies they don't know their head from their hiney when it comes to fixing anything more technical than a coffeemaker (and they can easily botch that job if you let them) So I needed a lock that was as reliable as a rock, wouldn't suck the battery dead in a couple months, would have zero problems integrating with our Vera controller, and be easy to re-key. Alfred’s smart deadbolt lockset has an illuminated touchpad and a big, easy-to-read display. In order to use the app’s lock and unlock functionality, you must be within a few feet of the lock at all times. Wi-Fi connectivity is required for remote access (or a Z-wave module to connect to Z-wave home hubs). The DB2-B was easy to set up and took approximately 15 minutes, with Alfred’s app configuration requiring an additional 10-15 minutes. Creating access codes for our test home’s inhabitants was a breeze using the app. Numeric PINs range from four to ten digits in length. We were pleased to be able to choose our own length rather than being confined to a predetermined length. Using our phone’s location services, we were able to unlock the door by merely touching the lock—or if we preferred, we could open up the app and unlock or lock it.

In this review, Schlage’s Encode Smart Deadbolt is compared to a number of competing locks available on the market. However, the American National Standards Institute gives it a Grade 1, the highest possible grade for locks. Deadbolts that meet Grade 1 mechanical standards must be able to survive 250,000 cycles and 10 door blows with hammers, as well as being resistant to corrosion. It’s not hard to see why the lock was rated so highly—its metal housings protect both the inside and outside mechanisms. As with the mechanical lock cylinder, the deadbolt is encased in a metal extension. It’s hefty, which we found encouraging as we fitted it. A single screwdriver is all it takes to install the device (though an impact driver would have helped us speed things along). If you’re replacing a current deadbolt or installing the Encode in a pre-hung door that has been drilled for a deadbolt, you can expect to spend around 10 to 15 minutes setting it up.
