If you’re thinking about starting into hand-spinning or searching for the ideal present for a first-time hand-spinner, this list of the 10 best spinning wheels for beginners is for you. In this post, we will discuss ten outstanding beginning spinning wheels that are simple to learn on, long-lasting, high-quality, and made by reputable producers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

FAQ about spinning wheels

How much time does it take to learn how to spin wool?

Depending on the size, an average sweater takes 700 – 1000 grams of yarn. So, at the weight that people use for handknits, spinning enough yarn to knit a garment would take roughly 10-15 hours. If the handspun yarn is colored, it is done after it has been spun.

What is the price of a spinning wheel?

Even a mid-level wheel from a reputable wheel maker, which is a good starting point for most of us, costs several hundred dollars (prices vary dramatically depending on the maker and the function(s) of the wheel, but expect to pay between $450 and $850 — and that’s usually for your basic wheel and standard 3 bobbins).

What is the purpose of a Lazy Kate?

Lazy Kates is an excellent addition to your spinning practice! A Lazy Kate, which is often used for plying yarn, is perfect for playing many yarns together and may be used any time yarn must be wound off a bobbin.

What are the many kinds of spinning wheels?

The most frequent spinning (flying) wheel styles include the Saxony wheel, castle wheel, Norwegian wheel, and contemporary wheel.

Fantasia Spinning Wheel - Unfinished

Contemporary wheel

Our opinion:

The most recent addition to the Kromski collection. In every way, this is a totally contemporary wheel, yet the idea and design are unmistakably Kromski. What is not immediately apparent is the introduction of a new single drive flyer design. With this adaption of the Kromski Quick Change Flyer, there is no need to deal with a drive band when changing speeds. The whorl can be “changed” for various speeds, and to change bobbins (all Kromski bobbins fit the Fantasia), the flyer’s front is simply pulled off. The bobbins are changed in record time. The hardwood spinning wheel and flyer are both mounted on sealed bearings, resulting in an extraordinarily sensitive sensation to the touch.

Promising review:

The wheel is fantastic! I'm fairly new to spinning, but the Fantasia takes a lot of the stress away. Low learning curve, very friendly wheel, and easy to use. I'm spending most of my time learning how to spin better rather than learning the equipment. Love the styling as well! [...]

Our opinion:

The most recent iteration of the well-known Kiwi Spinning Wheel. Folding treadles are now available for simple storage and transportation. Because of its simple learning ratios, twin treadle, and low price, this is a good starting wheel. The twin treadle and ball bearings provide effortless treadling and “hands-free” starting. Treadles are hinged to allow for a natural heel-toe movement. The flexible driving cable does not need to be adjusted when you go from one ratio to another and constantly retains the proper tension. The scotch tension makes it simple to manage the drafting process. Right and left-handed spinners will like the center flyer. The wheel is simple to build with the included Allen key, and the sturdy design makes it perfect for individuals, schools, and organizations.

Promising review:

This was my first spinning wheel purchase, and I am absolutely thrilled with it! It was easy to assemble, and I love that it folds up for storing. A great wheel for beginners for a pretty reasonable price!

Minstrel Spinning Wheel - Walnut Finish

Our opinion:

This lovely, compact, portable wheel has a broad, stable base for the twin treadle action and a bigger wheel than many upright wheels. The wheel is simple to install on the two support posts. The third post may hold a distaff if desired. The Minstrel is bigger than the Kromski Mazurka, with stronger, bolder lines and a larger base to handle the greater wheel diameter and double treadles. It is a double drive wheel, but it has a Scotch tension set-up for people who prefer a single drive experience. The Minstrel is crafted of European alder and birch and has an ancient aspect that makes it ideal for re-enactors.

Promising review:

The Kromski Minstrel is my first spinning wheel. It was easy to finish and assemble. The YouTube videos from Kromski and The Woolery helped me to be actually spinning usable yarn within days. [...]

Matchless Spinning Wheel - International

Most sensitive spinning wheel

$1.65
Our opinion:

International Version of the Schacht Matchless Spinning Wheel with Double Treadle. Instead of the normal Danish oil finish, this international version has a lacquer finish. The Schacht Matchless Spinning Wheel is today’s most sensitive spinning wheel. You’ll love these wheels’ unrivaled capabilities whether you pick single or double treadle movement. The Schacht Matchless Spinning Wheel is available in double drive, Scotch tension, and bobbin-lead configurations. The wheels have two flyer whorls (medium and fast) and four extra flyer whorls with spinning ratios ranging from 4:1 to 21:1. For accurate motion, self-aligning bronze bearings support the 19.5′′ driving wheel and flyer shaft. For long and exceptional service, each flyer is carefully balanced, and the bobbins and flyer whorls are trued on center.

Our opinion:

This Saxony wheel from Schacht wheel is exquisitely constructed, and it evokes an everlasting feeling of history while using cutting-edge woodworking methods to do so. The Saxony wheel, which was created in collaboration with Rick and Marge Reeves, blends classic design features into a wheel that is a wonderful spinner as well. It is constructed of solid cherry wood and finished with Danish oil to give it a unique appearance and functionality. This may be used with either a single or double treadle, and it can be synchronized with either a right or left flyer arrangement.

Ladybug Spinning Wheel

Suitable for beginning spinners

Our opinion:

The Schacht Ladybug Spinning Wheel is suitable for beginning spinners, simple to treadle, portable, and as charming as a bug! The Ladybug is made of genuine Schacht wood and has a one-of-a-kind design that is both utilitarian and appealing. The Ladybug’s built-in carrying handles and small weight make it simple to pick up and move. An optional connected tensioned Lazy Kate attaches into the front leg, making it portable as well! Scotch tension is utilized on the Ladybug Spinning Wheel, which may also be used in double drive mode. The Ladybug comes with medium and fast flyer whorls, as well as slow and high-speed whorls, which may be utilized for a variety of ratios.

Promising review:

This is my first spinning wheel and I absolutely love it. It’s cute, easy to store, and came with a starter kit that’s been useful to help me get used to the wheel. The shipping was fast and the packaging was secure. Even being left in the rain for a short while, nothing was damaged. I look forward to continuously using my ladybug.

Traveller Spinning Wheel

Easier to move

price from

Our opinion:

A more compact wheel that is easier to move. Technically identical to the Traditional, but now only available with a twin treadle. The four driving ratios on this lightweight, compact castle wheel will spin fine to medium yarn and thick yarn with the optional giant flyer. The wheel has multiple treadles that are hinged to provide for a comfortable heel-toe motion. Treading on ball bearings is smooth and easy. Add this castle-style spinning wheel to your shopping basket right now. The separate drive band and bobbin brake adjustment are simple to learn and use.

Traditional Spinning Wheel - Single Drive

Simple to use

price from
$659.00
Our opinion:

The most widely used spinning wheel in the world today is the Traditional Spinning Wheel by Ashford. What is the reason for its widespread acceptance? The adjustment for the drive band and bobbin brake is straightforward to comprehend and simple to use as a result. The bobbins may be changed in a matter of seconds. The use of Scotch tension and a four-speed flyer allows for the production of a broad diversity of yarn. The maiden bar can be perfectly aligned with the four-speed whorl thanks to the horizontal adjustment.

Promising review:

I absolutely love this wheel. I wake up in the morning excited to use it. It's so easy to work with and I've been getting better every day thanks to the YouTube channel and face group. I'm already looking to upgrade with a Jumbo flyer and tensioned lazy Kate.

Our opinion:

The fantastic Flatiron spinning wheel is completely customizable; you may create it using either the flyer on the left or the flyer on the right. The system will spin true thanks to self-aligning bearings in the maidens and a fully adjustable driving wheel. The ingenious fast release mechanism makes changing bobbins a breeze. The Flatiron may be configured with any of the three tensioning methods, as well as Schacht intelligently designed fine threaded tension control. All of Schacht’s current whorls are compatible with the Flatiron, enabling you to spin the yarns of your dreams, from fine frog’s hair to art yarn.

Promising review:

It took me two days to put together and two days to get the correct spin but after that I am on an incredible journey and could not be happier with this purchase. I have been able to spin fine and love it. Thank You to The Woolery!

Sidekick Spinning Wheel - No Flyer

Transmitable

price from
$796.00
Our opinion:

Sidekick without Flyer, bobbins, or whorls. You may transmit your current flyers, bobbins, and whorls from a Matchless or Ladybug to the Sidekick. Transport bobbins, flyers, and whorls all at one place. Uses Scotch tension and a fine-tuned control knob to do this. On ball bearings, the driving wheel revolves. Using self-aligning bearings, the flyer rotates. Using a drive band tension adjustment, all whorls may be driven with a single drive band.

Conclusion

A spinning wheel is a lovely investment that retains its worth well if properly cared for. There are always individuals around seeking used spinning wheels for sale, so if you come across a fantastic spinning wheel that you fall in love with, don’t be afraid to pay a little more to obtain precisely what you want. We also believe that after you’ve become an active hand-spinner, you should have two wheels: a high-end wheel for at-home usage and less-expensive, portable spinning wheels like the ones indicated above for taking with you if you go to a fair, fiber festival, or spinning club. So, which one do you prefer?
