When it comes to the greatest snare drums for metal music, you’ll want something loud, aggressive, and in-your-face. Most wood snare drums just won’t make it in this aspect, therefore brass or steel are your best bets in terms of material. Another factor to consider is durability. If you play a heavy kind of music, you’ll probably be hitting the drums quite hard and performing a lot of rimshots. You’ll want something with the high build quality and a track record of dependability. Let’s have a look at some of the finest death metal snare drums!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Just in case you wonder...

Are deeper snared louder?

Shallower snares provide a tighter and louder sound, as a rule of thumb. A deeper snare, on the other hand, provides a lower sound. When tuned low, however, a deeper snare produces a fatter sound that is not necessarily low.

What snare drum size should I get?

Unless you want a special sort of snare, the size should be adult. 14×5.5″ is the default. It’s big enough to make loud enough sounds, yet it’s light enough to carry and march with. Specific piccolo or soprano models are only worth your time if you want to learn to play one.

How much does a good snare drum cost?

The majority of snare drums range in price from $500 to $1000. A snare drum that costs more than $1000 is likely to be a special model or a custom-made item. True, snare drums are pricey, but they are definitely worth it when you realize that the snares are the ones you hit the most while drumming.

What are types of snare drums?

– Drum Set Snare: This is the well-known, idiomatic snare used in jazz, pop, country, hip-hop, and other genres.
– Tarol: A Tarol is similar to a drum set snare, however, it has snare wires on the top head rather than the bottom.
– Orchestral Snare: It is similar to a standard drum kit snare, except it has a calfskin head rather than a plastic one.
– Marching Snare: This is a drum with a nylon or gut head that produces a larger, resonant head sound. The marching snare is the loud drumbeat heard during marches.

Handle high tunings

Our opinion:

This is the one for you if you want an unbreakable beast with a monstrous crack. It combines the high-pitched bite and attack of a piccolo with the booming, thick tone of a deep snare. It’s the ideal mix for individuals who want a snare that stands out and commands attention. The 13″ x 6-1/2″ 1mm steel shell is wonderful since it will not deform and can easily handle high tunings.

Big Black Brass Snare Drum

Thin and light

Our opinion:

The Pork Pie Little Squealer Black Brass Snare is a less costly alternative to the Ludwig Black Beauty. It has a 1mm thick brass shell with interior flanges that give the drum a great warm pop. Triple-flanged hoops are standard. They’re a little heavier than most, which means the drum will remain in tune for a longer period of time and you’ll receive a beautiful crack while hitting rim shots. Since the lugs are thin and light, they don’t contribute much more mass and weight to the drum.

Promising review:

I play in a classic rock and metal band and this drum really cuts through. Has a great rimshot crack and good crossstitck. I haven't even changed the top head that came with it. It is that good. You don't think about it if you are wanting a brass snare and can't afford a black beauty or whatever this drum is phenomenal. I actually think it is ever bit as good as a black beauty by Ludwig.

LM400

Rich overtones

price from
$589.00
Our opinion:

The LM400 has an aluminum shell with gorgeous chrome plating, and the Imperial lugs provide an elegant touch. It has a reputation for being an extremely loud snare with rich overtones. This is excellent for certain folks, but if you’re not one of them, a new snare head or some muffling should do the trick. Among the LM400’s famous participants are John Bonham, Steve Gadd, and Ronnie Vanucci Jr.

Promising review:

The Ludwig LM 400 is the best sounding snare drum ever made..it delivers a bright crisp snap when you play it..if your looking for right snare ..this is the one..

Our opinion:

The Black Beauty is one of the reasons Ludwig is such a well-known drum manufacturer. This drum’s craftsmanship is perfect. It is constructed from a single sheet of brass that has been machine-drawn and spun into a seamless beaded shell. It has a triple-flanged hoop for a fantastic side-stick sound and rim shots. This snare drum’s versatility allows it to pierce through any mix and slot right in, from jazz to rock to heavy metal.

Promising review:

The best snare ever! The sound and quality is just increadibly outstanding. The price also pretty cheap if u compare to other great snares. So this is a must have snare for every drummers!!

Our opinion:

John Tempesta is an inspiration to everyone learning to play metal or hard rock. Tama’s 14×7 John Tempesta Series Snare Drum embodies everything you love about his sound. This drum offers a robust sound without losing depth of tone, thanks to 42-Strand snare wires and a 2mm thick 7″ brass shell. This snare drum is one of the finest for playing live because it cuts through the noise to produce a loud and echoing sound.

Best steel pick

price from
$845.00
Our opinion:

This is the best of the best in the world of steel snare drums. The thick, 3mm shell has a lot of bites. However, the sharpness of the sound is offset by the deeper tones inherent in the instrument. This steel snare drum is elegantly polished in black chrome and has 10 classic lugs, a lightning throw-off, die-cast hoops, and the famed Gretsch knurled pattern on the center shell. The unrivaled brightness and pop will wake you up, while the dark tones will bring forth noises you didn’t realize you were looking for.

Our opinion:

Session musicians swear by this industry standard for its dependable broad tuning range and tight bearing edges. It can take high tunings effectively, producing a solid, focused tone. At lower tunings, it sounds like a wood shell snare drum. This old favorite has been around for decades, and once you start playing, you’ll understand why. This metal shell drum is ideal for anybody who enjoys experimenting; it will collaborate with you to discover the right character in your music.

Ian Paice Signature Snare Drum

With an internal muffler

price from
$429.99
Our opinion:

Ian Paice, one of the pioneers of rock drumming, was Deep Purple’s drummer for the whole of the band’s career. He was crucial to the creation of classics such as Space Truckin’, Hush, Fireball, and Smoke On The Water. Ian’s unique snare has a SensiTone steel shell beaded in chrome, chrome/brass tube lugs, and tension locks for secure tuning. This drum’s sound features extremely brilliant overtones and a lot of projection. It really comes with an internal muffler, which can be removed if desired.

Promising review:

I bought this snare about 3 years ago. It’s a great Rick snare. Very loud and cuts through. I like the locks on the lugs. I really think it’s a bargain and stands up to drums costing double.

Our opinion:

The Gretsch Bell Brass snare drum is one of the most popular options on the market. It’s the closest thing you’ll get to Tama Bell Brass’ iconic 1980 sound with this one. At high tunings, this drum cracks and keeps up with you, no matter how many beats per minute you play. The golden brass finish of the 3mm brass shell gives it a luxurious appearance while also increasing the volume for more depth.

10.
Gretsch
USA Phosphor Bronze Snare Drum

Excellent accuracy and projection

price from
$1,799.00
Our opinion:

It’s Gretsch’s heaviest drum and one that can really get the job done! For accuracy and projection, you can’t beat a 5mm shell and 45-degree bearing edge. There is also a “Snap-In” key holder that may be attached to the drumhead. To put it another way, using a metal snare drum is a lot like harnessing thunder. Even though this instrument is so strong, it’s not for the inexperienced musician who can’t appreciate its full potential because of its sheer volume.
