Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Let's dive into these questions!
How do I choose the right sleeping pad?
Let's start with your intended use because this factor will affect everything. Are you aiming for car camping, backpacking, winter camping, hammock camping, or something else? After that, choose the types of sleeping pads according to your needs. Is it air, self-inflating, or closed-cell foam? Next, and most importantly, the R-value. This point contributes the most to keep you warm. In addition, you also need to know what sleeping gear you combine them with. Correctly pairing your pad and bag in your sleep system is key to staying warm.
What are the types of sleeping pads?
There are three basic types of pads on the market. Air pads are my favorite because you can adjust the firmness of the mattress by releasing or adding air from the valve. It is also extremely comfy, lightweight, and the most compact type of pad when packed. Self-inflating pads let in the air automatically simply by leaving the valve open. They're generally more durable than air pads. The last is closed-cell foam pads which are made of dense foam filled with tiny closed air cells. This type works great underneath other types of pads to improve insulation and prevent punctures. If you are on a tight budget, the last type is a great choice.
What is R-value?
The R-value is a rate used to measure the ability of a sleeping pad to resist heat flow through, or we can also say, the amount of warmth it provides. The higher the number, the better it will insulate you from cold surfaces.
How to clean my sleeping pad?
Washing your sleeping pad regularly can prevent unwanted particles such as dust, dirt, or mold from damaging the fabric. First, remember not to use the washing machine. Instead, wipe down the surface after closing the valves. After that, air-dry your pad in a place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.

What's great about a classic closed foam sleeping pad is that you don't have to bother blowing it up and inflating the pad. Besides that, you can get it at a super pocket-friendly price. Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest has all of these points and will be the perfect complement to your hammock. It traps heat so you can stay warm all night.
This has become one of my favorite additions to my hammock. I took it on summer backpacking trip to the San Juan national forrest, where Temps fell into the 40's over night. I found it provided some addition warmth and the weight was nothing added to my pack. It is priced right.

The EcoTek Outdoors Hybern8 is one of the most affordable in its class. This one is equipped with an innovative rapid one-way valve design that makes the inflating and deflating process a breeze. The Hybern8 guarantees your body warmth in three seasons since it has an R-value of 2.2. Not to mention the premium woven polyester blend that helps this pad withstand anything the weather throws at it.
This sleeping pad is super light and durable, even my dog loved it! (her nails didn't damage the surface and she's a medium sized malinois) If paired with a good hammock, this is more than enough for camping even in cool weather since the air from the cushion insulates your body temp. Absolute success, I'm planning on getting one for the other members of my family.

Use the Outdoorsman Lab Sleeping Pad to make sure you can rest comfortably on top of your hammock, or on uneven ground. This pad even provides an inflatable pillow along with your purchase to support your neck. It has an R-value of 2.2 for 3-season warmth which makes you rest soundly like a sleeping princess.
This sleeping pad rocks! It fits right into my hammock and makes me sleep like a baby. To inflate it takes about 10 breathes, very easy. It doesn't loose air overnight and it packs up small just like my hammock. I look forward to using this on all my adventures.

With a 4.4 R-value, Klymit Insulated Static V Sleeping Pad retains your body heat and envelops you with maximum warmth when the temperature starts to dip. What makes it perfect for your hammock is its excellent support no matter what position you sleep in. Moreover, only as few as 10 breaths are needed to inflate this pad.
Great pack-able insulated mattress. Works incredible in a hammock as well. This one surprised me with the new flip valve. This valve is superior to the previous model.

Still from the Klymit Static series, this Static V2 sleeping pad is almost the same as the previous product. The main difference lies in its weight which is almost half lighter, which is 16.33 oz. So, if you intend to shave weight, this one may live up to your expectations. Also, with an R-value of 1.3, you will need additional heating if you plan to camp in cold weather.
... A friend of mine had one of these and said he really enjoyed it, so I purchased one. It works really well, and you can fine tune it by adding or releasing air until you get it just right. Being a side sleeper, this sleeping pad fits the bill.

The Therm-a-Rest Trail Scout will be perfect for you if your priority feature is lightweightness. Weighing only 14 ounces, this product occupies the top position as the lightest sleeping pad—at least on this list. Not only that, the expanding foam core is highly compressible. You will be the camper with the lightest load and the best sleep.
Adding this to a hammock sleep system is a game changer! That's the reason I bought it, and I think I chose wisely. It's light, flexible, durable, and fits perfectly in the hammock. Ground camping is much warmer now, too. :)

Next, we come to the sleeping pad by Hyke & Byke which promotes the perfect blend of comfort and weight reduction features. The Standard Appalachian does not only provide a cushioned sleeping surface to keep you comfortable but also offers critical insulation from cold ground temperatures. Not to mention the top-notch material for you to use in the long run.
I was excited that H&B finally launched some new products and had to give this a try. I took it out on an overnight in the woods by my house and it did not disappoint. Feels durable, super cushy, comfy to lay on and I love that button you press to tune the air pressure. Smart too, having a dump valve at the top. Makes rolling it up way easier. And I don't think I've ever seen a pad that came with it's own attached bungee. Pretty cool! ...

Therm-a-Rest Prolite Plus is a self-inflating pad which means you don't have to drain your energy to blow it up; such a helpful feature after a long journey. The 3.2 R-value delivers added warmth in the backcountry when the temperature drops. This ultra-compact sleeping solution ensures your body to get the best rest it deserves with a thickness of 1.5 inches and weighs only 16 ounces.
It's thick enough that I can sleep on my side without pain, yet it is light and seems to be durable. I let it self inflate for a while and then give it a couple extra breaths for my desired level of firmness. It folds up small too.

This one is a must-have for your next hammock camping. KLYMIT Hammock V Sleeping Pad is designed specifically for all hammocks that have a unique shape with four wings to provide wind protection. It is made thoughtfully, as evidenced by the non-slip Zones that hold the hammock pad in place; no need to worry about sliding-out. The most important thing is its 4.4 R-value which keeps you warm even in winter.
I hiked, and I hiked a lot. This product works as advertised. It turns a hammock, with the right sleeping bag, into a 4 season sleeping system. No cold spots. Comfortable.
|Dimensions||78 x 47 x 2.5 in|
Last in order but not of importance, we have Sea to Summit Comfort Light Insulated Mat. The pad comes a bit more pricey than the rest, but in exchange, you get excellent support as well as durability. The coolest feature is its antimicrobial materials which will not allow delamination and internal bacterial growth. Plus, an R-value of 3.7 ensures that no cold will touch you.
It survived a whole Appalachian Thru Hike, that is over 6 months of use every single day on harsh surfaces. The insulation was great, went as low as single digits with nothing but tyvek at the bottom of them inside a tent.
