Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Perhaps you need answers to these frequently asked questions

What are self-development books?

Self-development or self-help books are books that provide steps that readers can take to achieve a specific outcome or expectation. These types of books will help you develop the skills you want to improve personally or professionally.

Why should I read self-development books?

Self-development books guide you to find answers to puzzles that often occupy your head but you don’t know where to start. Generally, these books are written by people with strong experience or a huge success, or are based on years of study.

Do self-development books actually work?

Well, yes and no. No if you just read to finish without understanding and action to apply the message. Yes, if you want to devote the time and effort to apply the principles and lessons that these books teach you.

I'm not a reader. How do I get used to reading?

First, determine “why” you must start to build a reading habit. Second, find the book that best suits your interests. Next, make a reading schedule and commit to sticking to it. Finally, start slowly but surely. Don’t rush through a book just to give yourself some temporary gratification.

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich

Work less, live more

price from
$15.38
Our opinion:

The Four Hour Workweek is best for aspiring entrepreneurs who are ready to dive in and make serious changes to their lives. The idea offered was quite controversial, namely “escape the 9-5, live anywhere, and join the new rich.” Ferriss does not offer a general and cliché solution, but into the actual how of making that business, and your ideal life, a reality. You will be taken out of a job you hate or live a life of mediocrity. Enjoy your life by knowing how to live more and work less.

Promising review:

I find myself rereading chapters of this book every couple of months or so. It is all about efficiently managing your time and getting the most output for your input. My priorities on life were completely rearranged. There’s so many random sentences in this book that are quote worthy. I ended up doing his dreamlining and breaking down my goals into actionable tasks and I’ve improved my situation in every single category.

Think and Grow Rich

Manage your money smartly

price from
$7.78
Our opinion:

What’s most interesting about this book is that the title doesn’t say “Work and Grow Rich” but “Think and Grow Rich.” This book invites us to find out how money works so that we can control it smartly. Published in 1937, this book still holds the nickname of the “Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature” to this day. So the theory presented has stood the test of time. You are also invited to become an active reader by doing some “homework” to turn your reading into concrete action.

Promising review:

In your journey for success, and Ive read over 150 books on business and personal development, this is the godfather. The only true place to start. But be weary, because this book requests you physically do things outside of reading, such as writing your daily goals, writing your 6 steps and reciting them daily. You may consider these tasks mundane but this is the subconcious training that takes you from reading a book to changing your life. #DoTheWork requested in the book, otherwise it will be a waste of time to even read it.

Getting Things Done

No more procrastinations

price from
$20.98
Our opinion:

David Allen’s book, Getting Things Done, is the best solution for procrastinators who want to be productive. As the title suggests, Allen provides specific directions that help you to find your own productivity system. Allen has a lot of list examples in this work which make it easier to understand and actionable. There will be no more unchecked to-do lists, coming to meetings late, chat bombs from managers who ask for deadlines because you’ve succeeded in getting things done.

Promising review:

I've always had trouble being on time, staying organized, building habits, etc. Stuff just crept up on me all the time, and I felt like I was constantly playing catch up. This book has changed my life. It took a few tries before I was really able to adopt it completely, but when I did, it was like night and day. This methodology touches on every aspect of life, from the big pie-in-the-sky hairbrained ideas all the way down to remembering to buy catfood on your way home from work. You can use anything you want to implement this; all you need is a calendar, a way to make lists, and a little bit of storage space. I swear, you will not regret it.

The Richest Man in Babylon

Best classic business book

Our opinion:

The Richest Man in Babylon is beloved by millions. This classic business book is a must-read if you are starting a business or want to live financially secure. Inspired by the popular “Babylonian parables,” this book has always been the best recommendation on the subject of passion, financial planning, and personal wealth. Ah, of course, you can’t get rich in an instant, but this book is a shortcut to pave your way there. You will begin to feel fulfilled, not worry about paychecks, and live with peace in mind.

Promising review:

I've read this book many times and I try to read it every year so as to refresh my memory and ensure my path. When I first read this, it was an amazing epiphany and I immediately took action. I was broke, about to lose my house, and looking for a way out of the hole I'd dug myself into. The rules within this book works well! I live in Hawaii now, in a nice suburban house, without worry of money. I am always surprised when I'm handed my next paycheck because I no longer count the days to each. Many thanks to the writer, the translator, the archeologist, and of course, the Babylonians!

How To Win Friends and Influence People

No more "I'm an introvert" excuse

price from

Our opinion:

If a book was published in 1936 and is still the best personal growth books written to date, that means the value of the book really worked. It’s a timeless text which proves that the basic needs of humans remain the same: friends and influence. With writing techniques that are easy and natural to apply, this book will change you from a socially awkward person to the life of the party. This is a classic self-help book that will undoubtedly help you build confidence, become a good communicator, and connect with people like never before. No more “I’m an introvert” excuse.

Promising review:

I wish I had purchased this book sooner. Dale Carnegie's advice has remained constant and applicable across the years for a reason. It's simple and his techniques make perfect sense. If you're anything like me, you'll be kicking yourself when you see how you could have handled situations differently. I'm being transformed from a socially awkward, timid and defensive person, to someone that seems collected and confident. If you're having troubles in life and simply can't figure out what you're doing wrong, this is a fantastic place to start. Good luck on your journey!

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business

Change your habit!

price from
$11.38
Our opinion:

You think your habits are impossible to change because you have started since childhood, then you come across this book and that assumption changes drastically. Charles Duhigg helps readers find the root causes of why we do what we do. The contents are not only dreamy theories but real cases that have occurred in various people and large companies, ranging from key to exercising regularly, losing weight, being more productive, to achieving success in the world of work. Duhigg will invite us to recognize the early signs that can make us stop old habits and start new habits.

Promising review:

WOW! This is one of those books you read, and re-read, and then re-read again because there is SO much good packed in it. I love the way that Duhigg, the author, gives abundant examples of what it means to have a habit and how it has been done successfully by key players. The book is both scientifically sound from a psychological point of view, as well as inspirational, also from a psychological point of view. He blends both the science and the practical ("I can do this too!") worlds together. If you want to get better at a task, a language, a skill or other important trait, this is a book you'll love. From one eager learner to another (you know it if you are), you will love this book. Don't hesitate. Buy the thing. Read it. Study it. Apply it. You'll be glad you did!

If you are currently struggling to love yourself, get rid of fear and anxiety, and want to be proud of yourself so you can live a happier life, then pick this book. Jen Sincero released this book in 2013 and is still a favorite book until today, especially for women, to handle insecurities. The language used is joyful, accompanied by hilarious inspiring stories and the occasional swear word, making you feel like chatting with close friends. You don’t need to be an acute reader to enjoy it. After reading this book, your heart will be filled with warmth and make you realize how amazing you are.

Promising review:

I love everything about this book. I’ve had my self doubt, depressed days, anxiety, struggled with obesity, lived paycheck to paycheck, and also had a time in my life I was just content and happy. It slipped away because I thought I had it all figured out. I didn’t, not really. This entire book tells the truth, you may not like it but it’s the real deal. I laughed, and nodded my head in agreement on many pages and can’t wait to buy and read it again. I gave my first copy to my mom when I was done. Words to live by...valuable for a husband, friend, sibling, anyone who is ready and eager to live a happy, fulfilling life.

As a complement, you can while watching the series on Netflix with the title “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.”

Promising review:

Great book. I definitely needed some direction with my spring cleaning this year. I kept feeling like no matter what I did, my apartment looked cluttered. I would spend hours cleaning and it just still overwhelmed me. This book allowed me to rid my life of all these objects while still being guilt free. I grew up in a house with the "waste not want not mentality". So naturally I felt compelled to keep everything or else it was almost immoral. I also came to a huge realization to stop buying tons of stuff unless it really is either absolutely necessary or exceptional sentinel mental value. Lastly, I wouldn't believe it if someone told me this, but I'm actually sleeping better at night.
