Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
FAQ about spinning wheels
How much time does it take to learn how to spin wool?
Depending on the size, an average sweater takes 700 – 1000 grams of yarn. So, at the weight that people use for handknits, spinning enough yarn to knit a garment would take roughly 10-15 hours. If the handspun yarn is colored, it is done after it has been spun.
What is the price of a spinning wheel?
Even a mid-level wheel from a reputable wheel maker, which is a good starting point for most of us, costs several hundred dollars (prices vary dramatically depending on the maker and the function(s) of the wheel, but expect to pay between $450 and $850 — and that’s usually for your basic wheel and standard 3 bobbins).
What is the purpose of a Lazy Kate?
Lazy Kates is an excellent addition to your spinning practice! A Lazy Kate, which is often used for plying yarn, is perfect for playing many yarns together and may be used any time yarn must be wound off a bobbin.
What are the many kinds of spinning wheels?
The most frequent spinning (flying) wheel styles include the Saxony wheel, castle wheel, Norwegian wheel, and contemporary wheel.

Kromski
Prelude Spinning Wheel - Mahogany Finish
Transportable
The Prelude provides a unique property of compact mobility to people who desire a wheel evocative of the old Saxony design but require the convenience of a tiny, transportable wheel for events such as historical festivals and reenactments. With an 18″ diameter, the Prelude can operate at a variety of speeds/ratios. The Prelude was the Kromski’s first single-drive-only wheel, with Scotch Tension and a single treadle. The slant bench connects to a built-in lazy kate with a capacity of two bobbins. The Prelude is an ideal starter wheel since it is reasonably priced and simple to install, but it also has enough components and features to last a lifetime.
I am in love with my new wheel! It was easy enough to put together and well made. When I did have a question customer service was amazing! The sample yarn was a nice bonus. I was up and spinning within an hour.

Ashford
Traveller Spinning Wheel - Double Drive
It has multiple treadles
A more compact wheel that is easier to move. Technically identical to the Traditional, but now only available with a twin treadle. The four driving ratios on this lightweight, compact castle wheel will spin fine to medium yarn and thick yarn with the optional giant flyer. The wheel has multiple treadles that are hinged to provide for a comfortable heel-toe motion. Treading on ball bearings is smooth and easy. The separate drive band and bobbin brake adjustment are simple to learn and use.
I bought this wheel a few months ago and really wanted to test it out before reviewing. First off, I appreciate so much that when you buy the wheel they send you a free Kiddy knotty as well as a free bag of fiber. That was way more instrumental in learning to spin than I thought. [...]

Minstrel Spinning Wheel - Mahogany Finish
Lovely, compact, and portable
This lovely, compact, portable wheel has a broad, stable base for the twin treadle action and a bigger wheel than many upright wheels. The wheel is simple to install on the two support posts. The third post may hold a distaff if desired. The Minstrel is bigger than the Kromski Mazurka, with stronger, bolder lines and a larger base to handle the greater wheel diameter and double treadles. It is a double drive wheel, but it has a Scotch tension set-up for people who prefer a single drive experience. The Minstrel is crafted of European alder and birch and has an ancient aspect that makes it ideal for re-enactors.
I love my wheel! After extensive research, I decided to choose the Kromski Minstrel because of its beauty and versatility. The wheel can support a wide range of ratios, and supports both single drive and double drive (this was really important to me!) [...]

Schacht
Cherry Ladybug Spinning Wheel
It is lightweight
Schacht has taken the traditional Ladybug Spinning Wheel and turned it into a cherry-flavored confection! In addition to the gorgeous cherry wood, the driving wheel features a sleek black design. The Cherry Ladybug, like the maple Ladybug, is built with the same sturdy Schacht construction as the maple Ladybug, and its one-of-a-kind design is both useful and attractive. It is easy to pick up and move the Ladybug since it has built-in carrying handles in the legs and because it is lightweight.

Schacht
Ladybug Spinning Wheel
Lightweight
The Schacht Ladybug Spinning Wheel is an excellent choice for beginning spinners since it is user-friendly, lightweight, and portable. The Ladybug’s strong Schacht construction and one-of-a-kind design make it both useful and endearing. The Ladybug’s lightweight design and built-in handles make it simple to carry. The Lazy Kate may be linked to the front leg, making it even more convenient to carry along! Ladybug employs Scotch tension and may be utilized in double drive mode. The medium and fast flyer whorls on the Ladybug may be utilized for a variety of ratios, as can the slow and high-speed whorls. Your very own Ladybug buddy may be found on each and every Ladybug Spinning Wheel.
I am thrilled with my Schacht Ladybug spinning wheel! It was so easy to assemble and the basic introductory kit that came with it has been very helpful since this is my first wheel and I had no accessories. Thank You Woolery!

Schacht
Sidekick Folding Spinning Wheel
It can be fold easily
Schacht’s travel spinning wheel is known as the Sidekick. It’s designed to fold easily, yet be a solid spinner. It includes a twin treadle with integrated storage for bobbins, flyers, and whorls. The proportions range from 4:1 to 13:1. The drive wheel is supported by ball bearings, while the flyer is supported by self-aligning bearings. The drive band tension adjustment enables the use of all whorls with a single drive band. It comes with three travel bobbins. It comes with an adjustable carrying strap as well as a carry bag.
I have a Matchless and thought a Sidekick would be a lovely addition to my wheel family. It’s easy to set up/breakdown (with a bit of practice) and a joy to use. I love that it comes with the bag which makes transport worry free. I’m looking forward to traveling to many spin-ins….or using it outside on my deck!

Ashford
Joy 2 Spinning Wheel - Single Treadle
Lightweight and portable
With a folding treadle, built-in lazy kate, and carry handle, this tiny wheel is lightweight and portable. Fold and go — it fits comfortably in automobiles, as carry-on baggage on airlines (check with your airline beforehand since this varies by aircraft), and takes up minimal room at home. Using the four ratios, spin a variety of yarns. The flexible driving cable does not need to be adjusted when you go from one ratio to another and constantly retains the proper tension. For easy spinning, the wheel and flyer are fixed on ball bearings. Treadles set on polyurethane hinges for a pleasant heel-toe motion are smooth and silent. The wheel is pre-assembled and varnished and is ready to spin.
So convenient! I take this wheel with me everywhere: upstairs, downstairs even to the park! I've only spun on the electric eel nano before so I can't compare to other spinning wheels but it's been a great experience spinning with this.
