According to experts, a pop filter, although not the most spectacular or interesting addition to your recording equipment list, is a vital component of the overall setup. When particular consonants are uttered in a specified sequence, a pop filter prevents pops (also known as “plosives”) from being created by air flowing more rapidly into a microphone. Those plosive noises really degraded the quality of your recording; the pop filter seems to solve that. These are the most effective pop filters you can use in your home studio!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a pop filter?

Pop filters, sometimes known as ‘pop shields’ or ‘pop screens,’ are devices that protect your computer from popping noises created by ‘plosives’ in your computer’s audio. Plosives are the sounds produced when harsh consonants, such as the letters ‘p’ or ‘b,’ are spoken.

Why is your microphone popping?

When you move your lips to enunciate these plosive letters, a quick burst of air pressure occurs, which might cause your microphone to ‘pop.’ These popping noises might be magnified if you stand too near to your microphone. This is known as the proximity effect, and it occurs when plosives contact with the diaphragm of your microphone to generate an output signal.

How does a pop filter work?

A pop shield acts as a barrier between you and your microphone, intercepting plosive noises before they reach the microphone’s diaphragm. The pop filter prevents annoying popping by uniformly spreading the abrupt airblast so that it doesn’t overwhelm your microphone. They usually consist of one to two layers of acoustically semi-transparent material stretched over a circular frame, such as woven nylon or metal mesh.

How far from my mic should I place my pop filter?

Mic technique is difficult to master, and the solution to this issue is dependent on the speaker’s preferences. The pop filter should be at least 4 inches away from your microphone, and you should be between 1 and 5 inches away from the pop filter, according to standard practice.

Our opinion:

The VO: 1-A-PF Silver Pop Filter is a great match for your microphone. It clamps directly to your microphone, and the beautiful wrap-around retro design harkens back to Abbey Road Studios’ glory days, all while suppressing plosives and protecting the diaphragm. It has a clean, transparent sound and is simple to install.

Our opinion:

The Stedman PS101’s proprietary filter material sets it different from the competition. Unwanted airflow is directed away from your microphone by the 4.6-inch diameter metal screen. The filter is so good that it cleans up near voice work. Its attraction extends beyond its ability to purify your voice. For voice work, the PS101 captures every nuance of your voice, producing a neutral reproduction that complements your microphone.

Promising review:

The neck is very sturdy! Stays in place for my situation. I have it bent upside down. The pop filter is made out of metal so it redirects air extremely well! When I hold my hand behind the filter and blow air with my mouth on the opposite side. I feel about 5% air pass through verses removing the filter and blowing air straight at my hand. Does a great job at stopping air. And thats an extreme situation if you were blowing air that hard at your microphone.

Popper Stopper Pop Filter

Versatile Pop Filter

Our opinion:

The clamp may be attached to practically any mic stand or boom arm. The gooseneck may then be easily positioned around the microphone to suit your needs. It is strong enough to hold its position once installed. The two layers feature two shields of material apiece that will keep p’s and b’s out of your microphone. When singing or broadcasting, you may feel the urge to align your lips exactly with the microphone capsule. You can see through the pop filter to position your voice for best capture with four layers working.

Promising review:

I used this during a recording session and it worked as they all do. Very well. I was able to place this exactly where it needed to go, and then I was fortunate to not have to think about it until the session was over.

Dual-layer Pop Filter

Our opinion:

The 6-inch pop filter from Auphonix is quite popular and well-reviewed. Thanks to a dual-layer mesh screen, the microphone pop filter does not limit sound or compromise voice quality. The microphone pop shield lowers background noise while also increasing audio quality. Mounted on a flexible and fully rotatable arm. The microphone filter can suit any studio space, height, or angle.

Promising review:

it is exactly what I needed. Well made and works perfectly, It is designed to clip onto the edge of a desk, but it will clip easily onto the desktop stand that comes with the Blue Yeti Pro. It also works when clipped onto a microphone stand.

Our opinion:

If you’re looking for a globally recognized, well-made pop filter, go no further than The Pop from Blue. The Pop filter works with practically any microphone with a screw-on clamp, including Blue’s Yeti and Snowball mics. Despite the fact that the Yeti and Snowball need some tuning, Blue has prepared clear video instructions that show how to apply the pop filter to each microphone type in the most effective method.

Promising review:

I bought the pop filter alongside the Blue Yeti, and I was not disappointed. I tested the mic with and with the pop filter and it definitely came in handy for improving audio quality and eliminating harsh sounds from the audio tracks. The filter is easy to install with whatever base you may have, assuming they are compatible of course. A pop filter is necessary for anyone attempting to free up their audio from harsh crackling sounds, and you really can’t get any better than Blue products.

Harlan Hogan Signature Series
Avantone PS-1 Pro-shield

Broad Coverage Pop Filter

price from
$36.99
Our opinion:

Avantone makes a metal grill-shaped pop filter that wraps around a microphone and covers a larger area than spherical filters. Because it uses the same gooseneck and clamp as other pop filters, it attaches in the same way. The larger screen and curved design, on the other hand, allow you to move about the mic a bit more freely without fear of plosives.

Promising review:

I got this for my husband for his birthday. He does a podcast on audio recording and making music. After making a couple of episodes, he decided that a pop filter would be a good addition to his collection of recording equipment. He gave it a try this weekend while having a recording session with some of his friends. He was very pleased with the quality of the product and how well it worked for blocking the plosives of his singer.

SSPF-4 Spider Shockmount

Pop Filter with Shockmount

price from
$32.99
Our opinion:

The SSP4-4 combines a shock mount and a pop filter into one simple package if you like a pristine recording environment. The shock mount’s 8-point suspension installation reduces unwanted low-end rumbling, while the metal-manufactured pop filter provides outstanding plosive protection. Nady has come up with an amazing design. The pop filter’s curvature enables for productivity in a stylish all-in-one package.

Promising review:

I'm loving this pop filter! It looks professional in design, and feels very sturdy on the mic stand. The built in shock mount is definitely a plus. I like it because some beginners try to grab the mic in the studio when recording vocals. This immediately let's them know to just speak into the microphone. Also offers the option of removing the pop screen if you want.

MPF-6 Clamp on Microphone Pop Filter

Best Value Pop Filter

price from
$32.99
Our opinion:

The Nady MPF-6 pop filter is very popular among recording professionals, as seen by its over 1,500 positive Amazon reviews and great reputation. Known for its large screen, high-quality clamp, and durable, thick gooseneck that stays set, this is one of the few low-cost pop filters that experts feel provides high-quality results. This is a reliable pop filter that is suggested for everyone who need a typical pop filter of this quality and price range.

Promising review:

This is a very inexpensive and apparently well-made device. It has a good, secure mount which will not damage the mic stand and does not loosen accidentally. The filter itself seems to do the job in preventing plosives on vocals; some say that a nylon filter may affect the vocal timbre but I didn't notice that at all.

Proscreen XL Pop Filter

High-End Pop Filter

Our opinion:

The Stedman Proscreen XL is a high-end pop filter that singers and podcasters may utilize. It is, without a doubt, a high-end choice. The 6 inch screen diameter and 13 inch gooseneck are well-made, long-lasting pop filters that are among the best on the market. In any event, if plosives are a worry for you and you want one of the greatest products money can buy, the Stedman is the way to go.

Promising review:

I've never been compelled to go *out of my way* to review a product on Amazon. This is different. I spent hours editing out plosives, pop, and clicks from my prior fabric pop filter. One night, I got so frustrated while editing I bought this product in a passionate rage in the heat of the moment. Now - listening to the difference - it's amazing. I'm likely to spend at least an hour less time editing tonight due to this filter rocking the air control around the mic.

ASFSS6-GB Dual Screen Microphone Pop Filter

Dual Screen Pop Filter

price from
$34.95
Our opinion:

Instead of relying on a single screen to filter plosive sounds, the ASFSS6GB employs TWO screens to accomplish the same task. The first screen performs the same function as a pop filter in that it stops air blasts from entering the vehicle. As a consequence, any remaining air pressure is dissipated by the distance between the screens, resulting in an explosion that is easily controlled by the time it passes through the second screen

Promising review:

Well what can I say, I rap so I use this mainly for rap vocals. This pop filter has a very durable goose neck (the part that you can move around) it feels like bendable metal you won't have to worry about the pop filter falling I've been letting mine stay on the mic stand for days now and its still in the same position. I put my hand behind this pop filter and no wind gets through blowing normally.
