Pop filters are little gadgets that greatly enhance the sound quality of your microphone. They eliminate plosives. For those unfamiliar with voice recordings, it may sound strange. These are plosives. They appear when you say ‘P’ or ‘B’. Pops and thumps are other names. Plosives generate distortions and interruptions. They degrade streams and recordings, which is why pop filters are used on microphones. These gadgets will also shield the microphone from spit when someone sings into it. Pop filters are in high demand in the music industry because of their relevance. As a result of this need, pop filter producers have multiplied. As a consequence, finding a good pop filter has never been harder. If you can’t tell the difference between excellent and bad pop filters at the shop, try these options.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

FAQ about pop filter

How to avoid plosive when recording vocals?

Plosives are louder in microphones than they are in real life. While you don’t need to carry a pop filter in your back pocket every time you sing, a pop filter is required while recording vocals. Plosives are very harsh with condenser microphones. This is due to the proximity effect.

What is the purpose of a pop filter?

A pop filter is a filter that is used to protect microphones. It is the barrier that reduces or completely eliminates the ‘popping’ noises produced when air travels quickly past the microphone, causing a disturbing, unattractive noise.

What are the many types of pop filters?

Pop filters made of nylon mesh: The most popular form of pop filter is comprised of woven nylon wrapped over a circular frame.
Metal mesh pop filters: Metal mesh pop filters are another common option.
Foam windscreens: Foam windscreens immediately cover microphones.

How far away from the microphone should the pop filter be?

Mount the pop screen at least 10 cm (4 inches) away from the microphone for best performance. It’s also a good idea to gently slant the pop screen to prevent sound reflections from bouncing between the capsule and the pop screen.

Our opinion:

Stedman’s regular metal pop screen, the PS101, comes in a standard size. It has a 4.6 inches “Metal screen filter that keeps sound as clear as possible while directing air downward and away from the mic pickup point. In addition, the 13 inches clamp’s diameter is large enough to handle a wide range of mic stand shaft sizes. The Stedman Proscreen PS101’s transparency is a major selling point. The absence of high-frequency roll-off associated with pop filters is a big draw for many consumers.

3.
Harlan Hogan Signature Series
PS-1 PRO-SHIELD

Has a long-lasting physical quality

price from
$34.00
Our opinion:

The product has a long-lasting physical quality. People seldom complain of its metal structure breaking or bedding. Even though the Avantone is less expensive, it performs just as well as the Stedman. With the provided adjustable clamp, most stands and booms are compatible. You don’t have to worry about the shorter gooseneck since it features an adjustable clamp. Normally, high-pass filters have large holes in their metallic meshes to allow high frequencies to pass through, but this filter has much smaller gaps.

Promising review:

I narrate audiobooks and use this filter. I love it because it is more rigid and not 'floppy' like many others. Also the attachment bracket is adjustable and secure.

Popper Stopper Pop Filter

Simple to set up

price from
$33.52
Our opinion:

Plosive noise may be reduced by 20dB to 30dB using the PS-6 Popper Stopper. At 8kHz to 9kHz, the material removes around 3dB of unwanted sibilance. This makes it ideal for louder vocalists or microphones that are more sensitive to high-frequency noise. The degree of attenuation it provides, even for the loudest voices, is well-liked by users. Despite the fact that it’s not completely transparent, many claim that it’s their go-to filter for more forceful speech tones. Several reviews have mentioned how simple it is to set up.

Professional Microphone Pop Filter

Can be adjusted to many of settings

price from
$10.99
Our opinion:

Using a 360-degree swivel neck, this universal pop filter may be positioned at any angle and yet remain in place. The clamp allows it to be used in a variety of situations. The twin mesh filter performs in the same way as other industry-standard filters. Protecting recordings from the grating thud of letters like “P,” “T,” and “D” when they are spoken swiftly or toughened. A softer, more balanced sound is sent to the studio microphone as a result of the sound wave being dissipated between the two layers. This all-purpose pop filter does its job well and can be adjusted to a variety of settings.

Microphone Pop Filter

Simple to position it

price from
$11.99
Our opinion:

Clip-on pop shield with two layers that is round in shape. A rotating screw clamp allows this filter to be attached to a wide range of boom stands and microphone stands. Secondly, the dual-layer protects audio productions from being distorted by strong air currents. It also aids in the dispersion of air inside the second layer, which reduces the power of sound that reaches the microphone. With a solid neck, it’s simple to position it exactly where it’s needed. It can’t be moved once it’s in place. Instead of using an outside frame like many other comparable goods, this shield is made entirely of fabric, making it both lighter and less bulky. Recording pops and sibilance will be reduced, making it ideal for live streams.

Promising review:

I only bought this thinking it would be a dud, but it is the best thing to happen. It clamps on my desk and streaming is now so much easier. I highly recommend this product.

7.
Auphonix
Pop Filter for Mic - 6-inch Diameter

May be used with most USB desktop microphones

price from
$19.99
Our opinion:

Since this 6-inch Auphonix pop filter may be used with most USB desktop microphones, it was specifically created with the Blue Yeti in mind. You won’t have to worry about damaging your studio microphone with this pop shield since it doesn’t attach to the boom arm or Blue Yeti stand. In order to avoid distorted voice recordings caused by high-impact sound delivery, it has a double mesh pop screen. The Auphonix 6-inch pop screen eliminates distortion and softens background components when recording in a variety of environments. The Auphonix flat clamp gooseneck type holder effortlessly and effectively holds the shield’s weight. Once you’ve bent and adjusted the Auphonix pop filter to your liking, it’ll stay put.

Promising review:

While it definitely clamps directly to my yeti’s stand, I like attaching it to my desk to move out of the way when not in use. Sounds good over stream and discord, with no pops heard. This works in perfect conjunction with the hiss/wind filter and provides clear audio that is easier to edit.

MPF-6 6-Inch Clamp On Microphone

Adjustable clamp

price from
$32.99
Our opinion:

Because of its low price, this pop filter distinguishes out from the others. Customers are concerned about this since low-cost pop filters are often constructed from flimsy materials that fail prematurely. The MPF-6, on the other hand, stands out since its modest price tag does not represent its quality, which is why it is so popular. Nylon mesh is used, and the clamps may be adjusted to accommodate most microphones. Because most clamps only fit a tiny subset of pipe sizes, that feature is all the more important.

Promising review:

We use this for our 2nd mic in our Hot Hitz Radio streaming studio. Seems to do what it'ssupposed to do. We would suggest this product.

OnStage ASFSS6-GB Dual Screen Microphone Pop Filter - Best Pop Filter for Streaming: Blocking air burst
https://www.amazon.com/

9.
OnStage
ASFSS6-GB Dual Screen Microphone Pop Filter

Blocking air burst

price from
$34.95
Our opinion:

This filter has been compared to the MPF-6. In contrast to the MPF-6, which only has one screen, this model is notable for having two. Air bursts are blocked by a single screen, much as the MPF-6. The space between the screens is then used to expel any leftover air pressure. The plosives, if they’re still there, won’t make it beyond the second screen. In theory, the two screens will give twice as much protection as the one. There are many who believe the high-frequency detail may be lost because of this arrangement. However, for the time being, this is just a hypothesis. This has never happened to anybody who has used the filter.

Promising review:

This pop filter has a clean professional look, just like in the picture. The dual screen removes any "pops" from speech or singing. I have used it for recording songs and has left some clear sounding vocals. The wire-rod that holds the filter is firm, you can twist it in almost any position and it will hold up.

THEPOP Universal Pop Filter

Aesthetic design

price from
$46.99
Our opinion:

A large number of the filters on the market are geared toward utility rather than aesthetic appeal. In both areas, this pop filter outperforms the competition. Design-wise, it’s up there with the best of them. There is more to this item than its beautiful metallic wire mesh and body, however, the pop filter has a long service life. Moreover, it is capable of eradicating your Bs and Ps’ pops and thumps with unmatched precision and efficiency. Its only shortcoming is the added weight. As a result of the filter’s weight, microphones and stands with lesser weights are unable to stand up to it. It can only be used with microphones that are just as weighty. This filter isn’t for you if your microphone isn’t big enough.

Promising review:

I do voice-over powerpoints in a K-12 education setting, and I must say, this filter makes a world of difference. Instead of being a distraction, my voice is actually a benefit... not that I'm all that as a presenter, but with the filter my voice is clear and robust. High recommendation!

Conclusion

Some pop filters are designed for certain brands of microphones, but may also be bolted to desks or other surfaces. If it is a universal pop filter, it will generally be included under the bullet points under the tag “universally compatible.” Also, make sure the pop filter fits the microphone stand. The stands are either tubular or rectangular, and it matters a lot if you pick the improper attachment and can’t mount it! Pay attention when picking a pop filter and read the bullet points and descriptions before purchasing, otherwise, you may wind up with the wrong fit!
