Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
In case you don't know...
How often should you apply bug repellent?
The duration of insect repellents ranges. Some offer protection for up to 12 hours, while others only offer protection for a few hours. Read the label carefully to establish how long the formula will last, and reapply as needed, depending on the situation.
What ingredients should you look for?
Bug repellents are made up of a variety of active ingredients. According to the EPA, DEET, picaridin, allethrin, permethrin, citronella, and oil of lemon eucalyptus are efficient insect repellents. Some of these compounds are more powerful than others at repelling specific species of insects, so be sure you pick one that is specifically made to repel the bugs in your area.
How do mosquito repellents work?
Mosquitoes use their sense of smell to locate a blood source which is readily available. Repellents are applied to the skin, where they dissipate and suppress the sense of scent, effectively making you invisible to mosquitoes. They may still come across you as they soar through the air, but they can’t actively track you down just on the smell of your blood.
What to look for when buying mosquito repellent?
Consider the following:
1. Ingredients, there are five major ingredients used; Essential oils, picaridin, DEET, permethrin, and IR3535
2. Longevity: Make sure you select the one with the appropriate longevity.
3. Ease of Use: Choose from wipes, lotions/balms, sprays, or even just setting up a piece of technology to see which one best suits your needs.
10 Reviews: Best Mosquito Repellent Essential Oil (Aug 2022)
Starting with Cedarwood essential oils, which have a pleasant scent for humans but aren’t so pleasant for mosquitoes. It’s antiseptic, insecticidal, and antispasmodic. You can use cedarwood in a combination with other oils to repel pests and treat bites with a carrier oil.
I use lemongrass to make my own bug repellent! I used a 2 oz. spray bottle filled with water, used 20 drops of lemongrass, 20 of peppermint and 20 of eucalyptus essential oils. Shake it up and spray on your shoes and clothing! Reapply when necessary! I use it mainly for ticks, black flies and mosquitoes! Works well for me!
|AROMATIC||Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)|
Geranium oil protects the skin from premature aging, stimulates healing, and keeps bugs at bay as well as provides a delectable aroma. And one of the top geranium essential oil brands is NOW. They conduct comprehensive testing to verify purity, and their rates are often among the most competitive on the market.
This smells exactly like geraniums, so make sure you like geraniums beforehand! Very distinctive scent. Cannot mistake this for anything else. I love the health benefits but I mostly using it in the diffuser and in candles to keep away insects. Works extremely well. I pair it with lemon essential oil which helps cut the intensity of the geranium oil and makes it much more palatable to me

Eucalyptus can really help you breathe a sigh of relief. It works as a decongestant as well as a mosquito repellent. Not only that, but Eucalyptus also aids in skin healing. And, this Handcraft also bottles its eucalyptus essential oil in amber glass to keep it safe from the sun. Oh, a glass dropper is included.
I mostly use mint essential oil as an ingredient to home-made solution to help deter unwanted bugs and pests. i have bought various brands over the years, this one is the best of all my recent purchases. The mint scent is very strong, and very pleasing. Will buy again.

Rosemary repels mosquitos and aids in the healing of bites. When you need to keep mosquitoes away from your grill-out, try diffusing three drops of rosemary with three drops of peppermint. And, Radha Beauty delivers the essential oil in cobalt blue bottles with a dropper, as you can see.
I love this brand. Very affordable, tends to last a long time, and the dropper already comes assembled. I know that’s weird to point out, but there’s another cheaper brand out there that has an unassembled dropper, and you just can’t get the plastic out of the cap to put it all together. The quality isn’t terrible. It’s not the richest nor strongest but for the price it’s actually a good quality.
|VOLUME||4 fl. oz|
Lavender oil treats bug bites and other skin irritations. It works as an antibacterial agent to keep you from getting infected. Lavender, fortunately, is a natural insect repellent. And, here is Majestic Pure essential oil contains a steam-distilled blend of Lavandula angustifolia from Bulgaria and Lavandula hybrida from France, as well as a glass dropper.
Fantastic Oil with a great relaxing scent!

Clove essential oil is considered to have the longest 100 percent repellency duration. If used in this manner, the oil is quite strong and should be administered with caution to the skin. Apply it away from the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, as well as any surface that can be licked or sucked on by little children and infants.
Strong, but smells so good. It is a great compliment to blends.
One of the most well-known essential oils for repelling mosquitoes is lemongrass essential oil. Even the plant itself is healthy; merely having it around your patio, deck, or garden can keep insects at bay. The essential oil, on the other hand, is extremely potent and has been proved to be 100 percent effective against some mosquito strains and their eggs.
Edens garden essential oils are aromatic and therapeutic grade. They are delivered in a timely manner. ALL of their oils are certified under USDA Organic and BFA Organic Standards (which many essential oils are not). LOVE them!
Bergamot is a refreshing citrus scent that will make things smell like summer. The essential oil is also efficient for repelling mosquitoes and insects in general has been studied and proven to be nearly 100% effective against mosquito larvae. It should be used as a spray or dispersed in a room to keep mosquitoes at bay.
Great small, and great quality. I just love bergamot, with it's citrusy notes.
|VOLUME||1 fl oz (30 ml)|
Tea tree oil is a versatile essential oil that may also be used as an insect repellent. Tea tree oil is derived from Melaleuca leaves, an Australian native plant. Since this essential oil is good against other insects like bees and head lice, it stands to reason that it would also help repel mosquitoes.
Love this tea tree essential oil and think it is one of the best on iHerb. The aroma is so unique - mix of herbal and citrus notes.
|VOLUME||0.5 fl oz (15 ml)|
Catnip isn’t just for cats; the oil has been demonstrated to be especially efficient against mosquitoes, outperforming DEET in a spatial test (which means that the catnip oil kept mosquitoes further away from the subject). The main ingredient in the oil, nepetalactone, is also the one that gives the catnip plant its color. It can be used as an insect repellent by diluting it with water or carrier oil and applying it straight to the skin.
I use this in a bug balm that I make. It Works !
Mosquito repellent is a game-changer that has been proven to eliminate the vexing mosquitos and other bugs in your home. You’ve read our list above, which covers some popular products, and it’s now your turn to choose the one you need and want. Good luck!
