Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Just in case you wonder...
What is the difference between a modem and a router?
Both are little boxes with connectors, but only a modem links your house to the worldwide network. A router is what permits other devices to connect to the network through a wireless signal. It also enables such gadgets to communicate with one another.
Is it necessary to have both a modem and a router?
Users’ requirements differ, thus some set up a modem to which gadgets will be directly linked. Others have equipment that cannot be plugged in, so they acquire a router to transmit the signal wirelessly. However, a modem is not required since routers can be used to form a LAN without Internet connectivity on their own.
Do modems have an impact on your internet speed?
If your modem fails or is slower than the specified maximum speed for your plan, it might affect your internet connection. You can’t also instantly improve the speed of your connection by getting a modem that is faster than what your plan permits.
Is it necessary for my ISP to approve my cable modem/router?
Yes, in most circumstances. Since your cable modem must be registered with your ISP in order to function correctly, it’s essential to get one that is guaranteed to be compatible. While some ISPs will allow you to register any cable modem, the majority will refuse to set up one that isn’t on their authorized list. Fortunately, most major cable providers in the United States have already “pre-approved” all of the main manufacturers’ cable modems. This information is usually included on the package or the manufacturer’s website, but if you’re still unsure, you can always ask your cable provider whether the modem/router you’re contemplating will operate with their network.

ARRIS
SURFboard SBG10
Best for budget
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a modem/router, this is the one to choose. Whether you’re on a tight budget or just don’t want all of the bells and whistles, our recommendation for the best budget modem/router is the SBG10. This box supports all of the major US cable providers, and it’s a better bargain than our other picks. Its Wi-Fi speeds on the 5 GHz band can be excessive, reaching up to 1,300 Mbps compared to the modem portion’s maximum speed of 686 Mbps. ARRIS recommends utilizing this combination device with plans with speeds of up to 400 Mbps.
This is the best combo router. It is so easy to install and set up. My last one, by Motorola, lasted almost 8 yrs with no issues. The surfboard, is by far, the most user friendly.

NETGEAR
Cable Modem WiFi Router Combo C6220
Super-fast connection
The Netgear C6220 AC1200 has one major advantage: it is reasonably priced! Who is this model intended for? People who rent modems from their cable providers don’t have super-large houses, don’t have a super-fast connection (no more than a 200Mbps connection, which your cable company can tell you if you have), and don’t have a lot of extra devices to link up. There are just two ethernet ports, allowing you to connect devices using a cable, which is speedier and more dependable.
Honestly the best combo of modem/router that you’re gonna get for cheap. Works beautifully and didn’t break the wallet.

Quick and simple setup
This DSL modem/router combination saves space, reduces cords, and comes with a setup wizard for quick and simple setup. Provides Internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps; speeds are determined by the speed of your VDSL or ADSL Internet connection. The MD1600 connects your wireless and Ethernet devices to the Internet at fast speeds, including cellphones, HDTVs, PCs, tablets, gaming consoles, and more. For Network Attached Storage (NAS) that supports DLNA Media Sharing, connect a USB storage device to the USB 2.0 host port.
Purchased this to replace a Century Link router/modem combo that had died after three years. Worked well with a little assistance from Motorola to get it up and going. We are NOT the most tech savvy people either... Great value.

I replaced my 6 year old Asus "combo" with this unit. It is powerful enough to send strong signal over 3 story's in our home. I had initial setup issue that Arris Tech Support solved for me (user error) quickly. I would recommend this and purchase again. Five stars!

NETGEAR
Nighthawk CAX80
Your future internet connection
If you have a very fast internet connection and believe you’ll be able to upgrade to a faster connection sooner rather than later, we recommend the CAX80. This is also an excellent gaming router since the onboard Ethernet, which allows you to connect your Xbox or Playstation via cable rather of Wi-Fi, is far faster than the Ethernet you’re probably accustomed to. You’ll need to check a lot of boxes to get the most out of this modem/router, but if that’s you, you’ve just met your future internet connection.
Modem/Router combo works great, and allows me the same internet speeds as renting the modem from the cable internet service. Coverage is fine.

Achieve nearly infinite coverage
The Orbi CBK752 differs from the other goods on this page. It’s the same modem/router combination, but instead of being one device, it’s two to guarantee your house is covered with a strong Wi-Fi signal—and if you have a very big home, you can add more to achieve nearly infinite coverage. Instead of having strong and weak areas in your house, the Orbi units communicate with one another to ensure that the signal is strong throughout. At least, that’s the plan. Configuration is a breeze thanks to user-friendly software.
I had my previous cable modem router combo for five years. It was definitely time for an upgrade and the Orbi seemed like a great choice and it has been for me.
