A cold face is almost as bad as a cold butt, and a cold butt is nearly as bad as cold toes. But nothing is as bad as frigid fingers, not your face, hips, or toes. Most skiers and riders invest in a good pair of gloves to counteract the problem, but as the temperatures start to drop, their fingers get cold, too cold, and there’s no way to warm them up except with a little handwarmer. As a result, the smartest among you will get mittens. Not just any mittens, however. The greatest snowboard mittens money can buy are warm and cozy, and real riders keep their fingers together for optimum warmth.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In case you don't know~

What are mittens good for?

Mittens are ideal for sports such as winter hiking, ice fishing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, skiing, and climbing that take place below zero. Extreme-weather gloves, on the other hand, are thicker and are not designed for dexterity. As a result, they may not be suitable for cycling or skiing.

How do mittens keep you warm?

A mitten merely acts as an insulator, slowing the flow of heat energy from the mitten to the surrounding environment. It traps your hand’s warmth within, and that heat, your own heat, is what keeps you warm.

Should mittens be tight or loose?

One of nature’s finest insulators is air. A looser-fitting mitt will allow for a bigger layer of air to form around your fingers, keeping you warmer. A mitten that is too tight will be uncomfortable to wear, and a mitten that is too loose will will feel awkward. When in doubt, go with the most comfortable fit.

What is the warmest material for mittens?

In general, a mitten with a high-level down-fill will provide the warmest insulation, but other factors such as thickness, lining, and an exterior made of leather, sheepskin, or waterproof material will also contribute to the mitten’s overall warmth.

Our opinion:

The Fleetwood Mitt is a must-have essential. The Fleetwood is a simple all-around option that avoids the bulk of some of its rivals due to a sleek, low-profile design that blends durable goat leather on the outside with a waterproof-breathable DK Dry™ lining inside. Its plush fleece lining and high-loft insulation are the pinnacles of coziness, and a variety of attractive design alternatives ensure that everyone may find something they like.

Promising review:

I bought these this winter and so far they have held up great. They are very warm and seem water proof. They have straps for your wrists and clips to hold them together. I purchased a small and have petit hands. I am 5ft6in.

Our opinion:

The REI Co-op Minimalist GTX Mittens will meet all of your demands, whether you want to personalize the various sections of your mitten or simply wear the shell of a mitten for shoveling or casual snowboarding in warm weather. This mitten shell may be worn alone or with the Polartec gloves (a lining is supplied separately) for light, minimum weather protection. An angled hook-and-loop construction adapts the mitten firmly to your hand, and an elastic cuff makes it more comfortable to wear.

Heat Touch Hellfire Mitten

Mittens With Built-in Heating Mechanism

price from
$449.95
Our opinion:

If chilly hands, fingers, or palms are your kryptonite, and you’d give everything for a hot hand, look no further than the Seirus Hellfire Mittens. These mittens are one of just a handful of pairs on the market with a built-in heating mechanism. The New 3000 Ultra Battery heats your palm with the simple press of a button, and its energy is always indicated by a changing light hue that is easy to detect. The added weight and grittiness of a heated mitten like this, as well as the charging of its battery, are disadvantages, but if you can get over them, this might be the right glove for you.

DAKINE
Excursion GORE-TEX Mittens

Breathable Mittens

price from
$104.95
Our opinion:

The name of the Dakine Excursion could be misleading, but this is one of the greatest winter mittens for a full-on adventure. This is another mitten with an over-the-cuff pattern that will go with any jacket cuff style. The wool mix lining keeps your fingers warm even when you need to slip out of the mitts for a minute, and the combination of a flexible softshell and goat leather palm makes it exceptionally comfortable without losing durability. To keep water out, Dakine uses a Gore-Tex layer, and these mittens breathe well, so they’ll keep your hands toasty without becoming sweaty.

5.
Hestra
Freeride CZone 3-Finger Glove

Strongest Cow Skin Construction

price from
$164.95
Our opinion:

Look no further than Hestra’s Freeride CZone 3-Finger Mitts if you intend on going freeriding and need a pair of 3-finger mittens that keep your hands dry, look cool, and will resist a beating. These nasty fellas, made from the strongest cow skin, will be your go-to lobsters for many seasons to come. The soft polyester lining is soft on the skin and quickly wicks sweat away while also providing insulation. The CZone™ membrane, which is made up of four separate layers and keeps your hands warm and dry, is waterproof and breathable.

Promising review:

Love the Hestra gloves and mittens! They are super comfortable and durable as well. When looking at the sizing, I would go with about 1/8 - 1/4 inch larger size than your actual hand size to allow some room for circulation and comfort.

Our opinion:

The Iconic Crab Grab Punch Mitten is a wonderful all-arounder that is cushioned. This Scott Stevens pro model is mid-weight and designed to keep your hands comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws at you. The fingers will remain toasty thanks to PrimaLoft insulation, while the 15K Dry ClawTM HIPORA® membrane will keep them dry by protecting them from the elements while still allowing them to breathe.

The Kinco 901T Ski Mitt keeps your hands toasty and is particularly useful for lengthy ascents in colder weather when full finger gloves aren’t required. The Kinco mitts include all of the same features as the Kinco ski glove, such as pigskin leather, HeatKeep®, and Draylon® threading. The interior of the mitts has a comfy five-finger liner that you’ll adore.

Our opinion:

The Women’s Amora mittens are part of Burton’s new collaboration with Icelandic designer Birgisdottir, and are inspired by the Icelandic environment, giving them a distinctive style and lots of warmth. The synthetic fibers are insulated using Burton Thermacore technology, which creates thick warmth-trapping air pockets for optimal warmth. The 2L fabric shell is also extremely breathable, waterproof, and rapid drying thanks to Burton’s Dryride technology.

Our opinion:

These mittens are designed for women who are looking for a pair of mitts to use in extreme weather. The Gore-Tex and leather combination is as stiff as it gets, so you’ll have to work hard to get into nasty enough situations for these mittens to give up on you. You’ve got yourself a set of soft and supple mitts with a robust, quality leather shell and palm that don’t simply rest securely around the hands but also do an excellent job of keeping the elements at bay.
