Skiers are split into two groups when it comes to keeping their hands warm in the mountains during the chilly winter months: those who prefer ski mitts and those who prefer ski gloves. Both of these tribes will gladly tout the benefits of their preferred option while also pointing out some of the downsides of the other. In reality, despite what some ski mitt and ski glove enthusiasts may tell you, there isn’t really a right or wrong answer to the question of whether to wear ski mitts or ski gloves. It is a matter of personal choice. Now, for those of you who prefer  to use ski mitts, our list of the Best Mittens for Skiing will help you make the best decision. So, have a look at the list below!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In case you don't know~

What are mittens good for?

Mittens are ideal for sports such as winter hiking, ice fishing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, skiing, and climbing that take place below zero. Extreme-weather gloves, on the other hand, are thicker and are not designed for dexterity. As a result, they may not be suitable for cycling or skiing.

How do mittens keep you warm?

A mitten merely acts as an insulator, slowing the flow of heat energy from the mitten to the surrounding environment. It traps your hand’s warmth within, and that heat, your own heat, is what keeps you warm.

Should mittens be tight or loose?

One of nature’s finest insulators is air. A looser-fitting mitt will allow for a bigger layer of air to form around your fingers, keeping you warmer. A mitten that is too tight will be uncomfortable to wear, and a mitten that is too loose will will feel awkward. When in doubt, go with the most comfortable fit.

What is the warmest material for mittens?

In general, a mitten with a high-level down-fill will provide the warmest insulation, but other factors such as thickness, lining, and an exterior made of leather, sheepskin, or waterproof material will also contribute to the mitten’s overall warmth.

Our opinion:

The Magne Mitt Ridge™ is an all-around system that keeps you toasty no matter what you’re doing by combining the greatest features of both a glove and a mitt. A SoftShell™ outer keeps the elements out, and the glove design keeps your fingers toasty together – but if you ever need that extra bit of dexterity that a regular mitt won’t provide, this one opens up with a simple magnetic seam to let your fingers out without exposing them to the cold.

Our opinion:

Hestra’s premium Army Leather gloves and mittens are made of top-quality, long-lasting leather with a warm, detachable inner layer. The Hestra Army Leather Heli Ski Mitten is one of the greatest ski mittens out there for people looking for a great extreme weather mitten that’s multifunctional and keeps your hands toasty. The army leather outer shell keeps water, ice, and wind out while also keeping moisture out, ensuring toasty and dry hands on long days on the slopes.

Our opinion:

When it comes to cold-weather gear, The North Face is one of the most well-known brands in the industry, and their Montana Mittens (and gloves) are an excellent option at a fair price. While their Montana gloves are more well-known, the mittens are a good alternative for those looking for a more affordable solution.

Promising review:

I love these North Face Mittens! They're warm, comfortable, offer easy adjustments, and the leashes are great, so you don't drop the mittens off the lift chair by accident.

Crab Grab
Snuggler Mitts

Extra Sticky Palms and Thumbs

$69.00
Our opinion:

Crab Grab focuses on two things: traction and mitts, and it excels at both. Their Snuggler Mitt is their warmest product, and it’s no surprise that it’s a team favorite. From Hokkaido to Alaska, the combination of PrimaLoft Gold Insulation throughout the mitt and PrimaLoft Grip-Control Insulation on the palm has kept riders warm. The 15K Hipora membrane insert is coupled with a 2L Crab-Shell Fabric with DWR finish, a design honed in for Crab Grab’s damp Pacific Northwest conditions. The mittens also include extra sticky palms and thumbs for effortless control while out on the mountain, since the brand is known for keeping things grippy.

Our opinion:

The name Dakine’s Excursion could be deceiving, but this mitten is ready for a full-fledged adventure. This is another mitten with an over-the-cuff pattern that will go with any jacket cuff style. The wool mix lining keeps your fingers toasty even when you need to slip out of the mitts for a minute, and the combination of a flexible softshell and goat leather palm makes it exceptionally comfortable without losing durability. To keep water out, Dakine uses a GORE-TEX lining, and these mittens breathe nicely, so they’ll keep your hands toasty without becoming sweaty.

Our opinion:

The Fall Line is a multi-purpose leather mitt. Its split-finger design allows you to adjust your helmet or bindings with the dexterity of a glove while keeping you toasty. The waterproofed quality cowhide shell and synthetic insulation will keep you warm no matter what Mother Nature tosses at you.

Our opinion:

Hestra’s Fall Line Mitt is made of cowhide aniline and offers warmth and dexterity for freeride skiers. With a five-finger liner, your fingers will have no trouble finding a place to call home during your ski day. Outseams increase comfort and grip on ski poles, while a neoprene cuff with a Velcro strap holds the mitt in place. Even with a 5-finger liner, the Fall Line Mitt will be the hottest of the Fall Line variants. Check out the Fall Line Glove for a better grip.

Our opinion:

Designed for skiers who sleep in their cars in order to get the first chair, cancel all other plans when snow is anticipated, and survive off cup-of-noddles in order to save money for gear. Any devoted skier’s gear cupboard should have the Dirt Bag Gloves. The robust goat leather shell is treated with a DWR treatment and supplied with adequate dexterity and a superb fit in this basic but well-thought-out glove. Warmth and moisture control are provided by a super-soft fleece inside, while the stretch-knit cuff keeps the cold and snow out while allowing for easy on and off.
