Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
In case you don't know...
What is a metal detecting shovel?
A metal detecting shovel isn’t the same as a regular shovel. It’ll be smaller and more portable, with serrated edges and a pointed or curved head. While they are more durable than garden shovels, they are better suited to softer soils.
What are the types of shovels?
Edging Shovel, Trench Shovel, Flat Shovel, Tree-Planting Shovel, Power Shovel, Post Hole Shovel, Handheld Shovel, and Root Shovel are some of the many kinds of shovels available today. Each one has its own set of characteristics, so you must pick one depending on your needs.
What makes a good shovel?
A robust, durable blade and shaft are essential, regardless of shovel type, to ensure that the shovel can penetrate difficult soil without chipping or breaking. The size, weight, and blade shape should also be considered based on the task at hand.
What is the Difference Between a Metal Detector and a Gold Detector?
Gold detectors are metal detectors that have particular parameters that are appropriate to their purpose or target type. The majority of metal detectors are multi-purpose devices designed to detect iron, coins, jewelry, antiquities, gold, silver, copper, and other metals. Additional features on gold detectors are often added to improve performance in detecting gold and canceling out mineral signals in gold-bearing areas. A gold detector often has higher frequencies, different ground balancing methods, and a higher price tag.

I use this digger for metal detecting. It is a work horse! I abuse it regularly, and it just keeps working. This is the first small digger I've had that lasted for than a month. At almost 2 years old it is in the same condition as I bought it. I highly recommend this for anyone tired of bending/breaking small shovels.

8.SE
Prospector's Choice 12" Serrated Edge Digger
Curved Design
It’s easy to see why this tool is useful for creating plugs. It’s designed to assist you through the cutting process. You can make very small holes with serrated edges that are both discreet and simple to fill. The blade is about 7 1/2 inches long. It’s one-of-a-kind since it’s slightly curved and offset to one side. The big stopper on the blade will prevent you from digging too deep after you’ve inserted it into the dirt. After that, all you have to do is turn the handle.
Bought this for metal detecting. Extremely sturdy and the orange handle is great for visibility. I would take away half a star because the factory coating on the blade makes the edge completely dull - not an issue in sand or loam, but in clay or frozen ground you'll want to take a mill file and put a sharper edge on if you want to avoid frustration.

9.Radius Garden
22011 Root Slayer Shovel
Contoured Spade
On the first impression, this seems to be a serious digging tool able to produce flawless plugs in any environment. It’s a heavy-duty shovel with a special design that makes it easy to handle roots. The contoured spade is a unique feature of this shovel. This makes it simple to make a circular plug.
Does a great job cutting through small roots and hard soil. Digging small holes around sprinkler heads or for gardening is much easier now that I have this shovel. Wish I had bought it sooner. I especially like that the top of the shovel has an area big enough to put your foot on to generate extra digging power. Be aware, it's much heavier than a standard shovel, probably part of why it works better.

10.TAC9ER
Entrenching Tool Shovel
Threaded Lock System
It’s made of carbon steel and has a threaded lock system that keeps the blade in position when digging or entrenching. On the other side, it ensures that you are ultimately protected and secure. At this low price, the greatest part is that you’ll get a hard carrying case that can easily be connected to a belt or backpack for further protection.
I metal detect and many times need to dig up my finds. This shovel is always great to have along since it is lightweight and strong as well as sharp enough to tackle any job that I give it. This is one of the best purchases I have made in a very long time.
