Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does an insulated jacket do?

In cold weather, insulated jackets help to minimize the amount of heat your body loses to the natural atmosphere. There is no guarantee that they are waterproof; some people prefer to carry about a lightweight waterproof jacket in their bag and only put on the jacket when it is raining or snowing.

What makes a jacket insulated?

A typical insulated jacket consists of an outer layer—either a hard or soft shell—and an insulating layer that is built into the jacket itself. This layer is usually made of fleece, down, or synthetic material, all of which are excellent ways to keep warm in the winter.

When should you wear an insulated jacket?

Insulated jackets are just what you need for a winter coat and are especially beneficial for those who are particularly sensitive to the cold during the fall and winter months. These jackets can be worn as an outer layer or as a layer under a waterproof jacket on rainy days to keep you dry.

How long should an insulated jacket be?

So that it fully covers your wrist as well as the bottom 1/4 of your hand, the hem should be placed just where your thumb and index finger come together. This length will help to guarantee that your hands remain toasty throughout the day. Avoid wearing coats with a hemline that is shorter than this.

Roswell Insulated Jacket

Spaceloft Synthetic Down Jacket

price from
$249.95
Our opinion:

With a standard, hip-length fit, the Flylow Roswell is designed specifically for this kind of skiing. It has a fully taped 2-layer stretch fabric shell with a DWR finish for excellent weather protection. It’s insulated with 80 grams of Spaceloft synthetic down on the inside. Long underarm vents help control your body temperature during strenuous runs. Six outside pockets, two inside pockets, a helmet-compatible hood, waterproof zippers, and wrist gaiters with thumb loops are among the other features.

Breathable Insulation Jacket

Our opinion:

Looking for a budget-friendly ski jacket? Burton’s regular-fit option also serves as a snowboard jacket. It’s made of DRYRIDE fabric, which is breathable and waterproof and has critically taped seams. This protects sensitive areas such as your neck and shoulders. Living Lining and 40% recycled Thermolite are used on the inside, which helps to adjust your body temperature when you feel hot or cold. There are 80 grams of Thermolite in the human body. There are 60 grams in the sleeves. Pit zips with mesh lining for breathability.

Women's Insulated Powder Bowl Jacket

Ample Insulation Jacket

price from
$479.00
Our opinion:

The Powder Bowl from Patagonia is a step up in warmth and protection from the Snowshot above. It boasts ample insulation for all but the coldest days, due to a blend of 100- and 60-gram synthetic insulation, and a thick and hefty 150-denier shell. You get solid all-around toughness, weatherproofing, and warmth when you combine Gore’s patented 2-layer waterproof design with a high-quality DWR coating.

OUTDOOR RESEARCH
Carbide Jacket

Minimalist Jacket Option

price from
$299.00
Our opinion:

Outdoor Research is known for giving you a lot of bang for your cash, and their well-equipped Carbide delivers in spades.  This jacket, which has a 3-layer Pertex Shield waterproof membrane, competes with premium designs while being quite cheap at $299. With a weight of 1 pound 5.5 ounces (due in part to its thin 40-denier shell), the Carbide is a superb option for minimalist wilderness hikers.

Promising review:

I love this jacket! It is my go-to outer layer and has kept me comfortable and dry in some damp snow and blustery days.

Our opinion:

This wonderfully designed shell is built for deep days with Gore’s top-of-the-line laminate and an expanded back length, features a tall collar and helmet-friendly hood, and has a near-perfect mix of features and weight. A big, mesh-backed zipper down the front allows you to regulate your temperature throughout the day, and there’s enough organization for storing backcountry supplies (you also get extra-large pit zips for dumping heat).

Promising review:

Just received this jacket and I love it. I did size up from a medium to large for a slightly looser fit and ability for more layers. It looks great, keeps me warm, and has what you need. Maybe the only downside is no lower side pockets but when you have a backpack on you don’t go in there as much anyways. One of my favorite parts would be the thumb hole feature.

Women's Insulated Snowbelle Jacket

Synthetic Body and Smart Features Jacket

price from
$329.00
Our opinion:

Resort skiers will prefer the brand’s entry-level men’s Snowshot and women’s Snowbelle. We like the insulated model, which comes in a variety of designs including an uninsulated shell and a 3-in-1 jacket. It’s pretty toasty with an 80-gram synthetic body and smart features like a drop-in internal pocket for goggles and a soft-touch taffeta lining. The Snowshot’s pit zips let you adjust your temperature while lapping the resort.

Promising review:

This coat is perfect for everyday wear, boating in mild to cold sea spray and rain weather, or for skiing on the slopes. I love this jacket!!!!

REI Co-op
Powderbound Insulated Jacket

Straightforward Style Jacket

price from
$199.00
Our opinion:

The REI Co-op Powderbound is a good option for resort skiers looking for a warm and well-built jacket. You get a waterproof shell with 80-gram synthetic insulation around the core (lighter 60g in the sleeves), an outstanding organization both outside and within the shell, and handy features like a powder skirt and pit zip for little under $200. We also like Powderbound’s straightforward style and minimal branding, which means it can be worn for skiing as well as regular winter wear.

Promising review:

Keeps me warm when skiing with my kids, usually end up with just a tshirt underneath (Wi winters) . Comfortable. Just the right amount of pockets/vents. Great value for the price. Super happy with my purchase.

The North Face
ThermoBall™ Eco Snow Triclimate® Jacket

Exposed Water-Resistant Zippers

price from
$359.95
Our opinion:

A 3-in-1 ski jacket is a wonderful alternative for people trying to save money. You receive both a waterproof shell and an insulating mid layer with a single purchase, which can be zipped in on chilly days or left at home in spring weather (you can even wear the insulated jacket on its own around town). Although many 3-in-1s are affordable, we believe the $360 The North Face ThermoBall Eco-Snow is well worth the money. The jacket is well-made, has enough exterior storage, and has improvements such as pit zips and exposed water-resistant zippers. The ThermoBall zip-out jacket, on the other hand, is a notable feature, since it does an excellent job of imitating a lofty down item while remaining warm even when wet.

Promising review:

The jacket fits great, is light weight but super warm. The inner liner works great as a jacket when its a bit warmer out. The outer liner adds a lot of warmth. Would buy again for sure!

Helly Hansen
Alpha 3.0 Jacket

Ultra-Simple Jacket

price from
$475.00
Our opinion:

The Alpha 3.0 from Helly Hansen offers all of the features we look for in a resort-ready design. First, the torso and sleeves include a reasonable amount of PrimaLoft Black insulation, which provides a nice increase in warmth over a non-insulated hardshell. It’ll take the sting out of a frigid chairlift trip up but won’t overpower you on the way down. Second, due to the four-way stretch fabric and a no-nonsense athletic fit, the jacket allows for a lot of mobility. Rather of using a few stretch panels, Helly Hansen uses a four-way stretch pattern throughout the jacket. Finally, we like the Alpha 3.0’s design, which is ultra-simple, appropriate for people of all ages, and available in a range of colors.

Promising review:

Very light weight and warm jacket. It has all of the storage that you may need. High quality zippers and made to last. You will not be disapointed.

10.
Arc'teryx Store
Sabre AR Jacket

Tried-And-True Design

price from
$675.00
Our opinion:

The men’s Sabre (and women’s Sentinel) by Arc’teryx dominates the high-end jacket market, and it’s an all-time favorite shell for those who ski both resort and backcountry. The AR (for “all-around”) was mildly modified a few seasons ago, with a slightly longer and modern fit, but the rest of the tried-and-true design remains the same. Its superior 3-layer Gore-Tex construction is durable and provides excellent weather protection, while a soft flannel backing provides added warmth and comfort.

Promising review:

I use together with Sabre AR panth. Highly comfortable ,functional, breathable . Powder skirt can be attached to sabre AR panth . Long hip length helps me stay dry on powder. I am 180 cm - 80 kg athletic build using size M. It is just roght
