Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
In case you don't know...
Why do you need heel cups or insoles?
Under the foot and inside the shoe, insoles or heel cups provide support, protect your heels from blisters or rubbings, and guarantee a proper fit, particularly when wearing a large size shoe. If you have plantar fasciitis, a heel or bone spur, sprains, swollen feet, or other foot problems, you’ll need it to adjust the position of the foot bone.
How long should a heel cup or insole be on the feet?
Since it might take some time for you to adjust to having extra stuff in your shoes, you should try timing yourself. It can range from 30-60 minutes to 4-5 hours each day as the days pass. The activities you engage in, as well as the number of hours you spend on your feet, will have an impact.
What is heel cups or insole made of?
Medical-grade silicone gel, memory foam, carbon fiber, and other compression materials are used in most heel cups or insole. They may also have layered inserts to offer additional cushioning and support for the foot. The materials are light, flexible, and moldable, allowing them to fit into a variety of shoe styles and sizes.
How Often Should you replace it?
Depending on the durability, daily users of heel cups or insole should obtain a new pair every three months. The frequency with which you replace it is determined by the activities you engage in with it. Check for a reduction in cushioning if you start to experience pain in your feet (which is a sign of wear and tear). If you don’t wear it frequently, it can last up to six months before you need to replace it.
10 Reviews: Best Insoles for Running (May 2023)

1.Spenco
RX® COMFORT INSOLES
Cushioned Sock-Liner Insole
While some people like a firm and supportive insole, it is not for everyone. The Spenco Comfort Insole is our recommendation for those looking for a low-cost, cushioned sock-liner alternative. Because the bulk of shock absorption comes from the design of the shoe, cushioned insoles are specially designed to enhance comfort to your running or walking experience.
These are perfect for replacing sneaker insoles to accommodate custom orthotics.

2.CURREX
Runpro Insoles
Breathable Insoles
Although most runners will be OK with the basic sock liners, there are more form-fitting, cushioned, and breathable insole alternatives available. The CurrexSole RunPro will improve the comfort and fit of your shoes. It has a deep heel cup that helps collect your foot’s natural cushioning, the plantar fat pad, and is more breathable than other sock liners. CurrexSole’s website can help you determine your foot arch profile so you can choose the best model for you.

3.Wernies
Athlete Shoe Inserts
Honeycomb Design Insoles
Long-distance runners will appreciate the support, cushioning, and shock absorption provided by these insoles, which are made from a mix of foam and gel. The honeycomb design distributes pressure to reduce stress on your feet, while the reinforced arch support, deep heel cup, and anti-slip top layer enhance support, comfort, and stability. These insoles will last the distance, whether you’re going for a long run or plan to be on your feet all day.
I've never used insoles before so I bought 3 kinds to try. I thought cushiest would be most comfortable, but these ones with a firm bottom are actually best. My feet feel good while staying in correct alignment and I have no pain after walking around all day.

4.Sof Sole
Airr Insole
Gel and Air Cushioned
These Sof Sole insoles provide cushioning and support across the whole foot, which is precisely what runners need. They offer soothing comfort by combining gel and air cushioning to reduce the impact and effects of hitting the pavement. The Coolmax fabric cover keeps your feet cool, comfy, and dry, while the antibacterial coating keeps odors away.
I buy these for every new pair of running shoes that I replace around 400-500 miles.

5.Superfeet
Women's BERRY Insoles
High-Impact Foam
If you’ve experienced problems with unisex insoles, consider these Superfeet Berry insoles, which are specifically developed for women. They feature a thinner heel, a shorter arch for ladies, and a deep, narrow heel cup to keep the foot in place. The forefoot’s high-impact foam offers long-lasting comfort and additional shock absorption, making it ideal for running on hard, unforgiving terrain. The all-natural, organic coating that prevents bacterial development will leave your feet smelling and feeling fresh.
My podiatrist told me to try Superfeet years ago to help with my plantar fasciitis. It did the trick. I use the black ones for dress shoes and berry for running shoes. The pain went away and has never come back. They are a "must have" for me!

6.CURREX
World’s Leading Insoles for Running Shoes
Odor-Control Feature
These Currex RunPro running insoles are designed to absorb impact and re-distribute pressure across the foot, enabling you to run comfortably. They come in low, medium, and high arch profiles, as well as a variety of sizes, allowing you to obtain a personalized fit. They’re also constructed with bamboo for moisture-wicking and charcoal for odor control.
These are rather expensive but are the only insoles that work for me. They are flat (zero-drop) and work well in my altra running shoes, providing just enough extra cushion and support. They are easy to trim to fit. I just use the insole that comes with the shoe and trace around it. I'm very glad they come in different arch sizes as often insoles have too much arch for me. I got the medium arch in these (though according to their fit guide, I should wear the high) and they are perfect.

7.Spenco
Polysorb Cross Trainer Athletic Cushioning Arch Support Shoe Insoles
High-Impact Insoles
These Spenco insoles are designed for people with quite low to medium arches, but they perform particularly well for people who have flat feet. The soft Eva forefoot cushion absorbs shock and returns energy, making them perfect for running and other high-impact sports that put stress on your feet and joints. They’re constructed of an antibacterial substance to help prevent blisters and reduce odor, and they come in a range of sizes to suit both women and men.
I really like these. Bought my first pair about a year ago and have since put them in all my shoes even brand new ones. My podiatrist suggested this specific product for me to help with reoccurring calluses and arch support. I put them in wide sized shoes. They are a nice solid fit. They are instantly cushioning and don’t go flat. I haven’t needed to replace them before replacing the whole shoes. I plan to continue using this product indefinitely.

8.Sof Sole
Men's ATHLETE Performance Full-Length Gel Shoe Insert
Unique Foam and Two Gel Inserts
These insoles provide more cushioning than support, thanks to unique foam and two gel inserts—one under the forefoot and one beneath the heel. These budget-friendly insoles, on the other hand, are ideal for neutral-footed runners who need more shock absorption than their shoes provide.
I run about 18-20 miles weekly when not training for a longer event. In the past I've been able to extend the life of my running shoes with new inserts...though the inserts I used to use were discontinued. I tried these in my Asics Gel Cumulus 20 shoes (after trying a different set that had a hard plastic arch molded in and did not work for me) and they've been great...just the right amount of support to extend my shoes for running for a couple months!

9.Sole
Active Medium Shoe Insoles
Customizable Insoles
The fact that these insoles are customizable is the most amazing feature. Runners can either wear them and allow them mold to their feet over time, or they can oven the insoles for three minutes at 200 degrees and then step on them inside their shoes for additional personalization. They’re anti-odor-treated and provide both cushioning and customized alignment. There’s also an Active Thin variant that fits inside low-volume sneakers.
I have ongoing foot issues, these make a huge difference. Even the most high quality shoes do not match the support provided by switching out the provided insole for these. I have been buying/using them for 10+ years, they outlast most shoes.

10.Superfeet
Run Comfort Carbon Fiber Orthotic Inserts Insoles
Women's-Specific Proportions
Finally, but certainly not least. With a carbon fiber blend, a deep heel cup, and a gel cushioning pod, Superfeet insoles provide lightweight yet efficient support. It’s also designed with women’s-specific proportions, such as a smaller heel and a longer arch to better suit a woman’s foot. These insoles are cushioning from heel to toe for longer runs.
I’ve purchased these before so I knew what I was getting. They are the best insoles for me. I always worse cushy, comfortable insoles until I developed plantar fasciitis and needed more support. These were the most comfortable ones I found that still offer the support I need. I really like them and my feet are much happier now.
