A horse’s need for high-quality hay becomes even more apparent during times of extreme weather, such as a prolonged drought or weeks of wind and rain. With the best hay bags, you can ensure that you’re getting the most out of your horse’s stall, pasture, or trailer. As an outcome, you’ll save money over time. Limiting how much hay your horse consumes at one time is made easier by using a good haybag or haynet. Reduce waste by using robust hay bags and feeders that allow your horse to graze on the stalls. Here are the best hay bags for stalls!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How Many Flakes Of Hay in a Bale?

The answer varies depending on the flake and the bale. A hay bale typically has 12 flakes on average. The number of flakes in a hay bale is proportional to its size and weight. There would not be 12 flakes in every bale; there would be more or fewer than that.

How is a Flake of Hay Made?

The compression/release action that occurs throughout the bailing process results in the formation of flakes. Cut, compress, knot with wire or twine, then spit out in a rectangle form are the easy procedures in this operation. When hay is chopped, it tends to break apart into layers and is bound with wire or twine. These easily separated layers are referred to as flakes.

What is a Flake of Hay?

The baler pulls the dried legume/grass off the row, forming a flake of hay. The word ‘flake’ is used to describe a thin, handy, and simple to ‘flake off’ section of a rectangular bale by most equestrian aficionados who have been rearing horses for years.

How many flakes horses should eat in a day?

A tiny fraction of the flakes should be provided to the horses throughout the day. The average person consumes 5 flakes every day. It is, however, preferable to weigh the flake first and give hay at a rate of 1% to 2% of the horse’s body weight.

Slow Feed Hay Bag

Durable Hay Bag

price from
$44.95
Our opinion:

The only Slow Feed Hay Bag your barn will ever need! This ground-breaking hay bag is a long-lasting slow feeding solution with features that make loading hay fast and easy, as well as keeping the bag tight while your horse eats. Loading hay has never been simpler owing to the gator’s flexible mouth that maintains its shape! The inclusion of a hook and loop closure ensures that even the most educated horses will be unable to open it, allowing their hay to last as long as possible. This bag comfortably carries 10-15lbs of hay, allowing your horse to graze happily all day! A great alternative for slowing down easy keepers, amusing stall-bound horses, and providing more continuous feed throughout the day to horses that are prone to stomach distress.

Promising review:

This bag is perfect for my mini. I wouldn’t want to try to stuff enough feed in there for my horse, but for my mini….this is the best bag ever. No longer is the feed tossed out onto the ground and it slows her down when eating. Instead of feed everywhere and gone in 15 minutes. It’s contained in the bag and it takes her two hours to eat.I liked it so much i got three. Black, burgundy, and this light orange color.

Our opinion:

This net may be used to feed numerous horses while maintaining digestive health, making it a great alternative to metal hay feeders. It’s uncommon to come across a hay net that can feed a herd of horses in the field (360 degrees for the win! ), much alone one that is built for slow feeding (great for horses who are prone to digestive issues, who bolt their feed, or who waste their hay). The strong structure and bright colors of this net, as well as the six-month guarantee, are especially remarkable.

Promising review:

They are perfect slow feeders for our slant stall trailer. The horses don't have any trouble getting the hay out.

Unbreakable Hay Bag

price from
$47.99
Our opinion:

This has a great capacity for extra weight and is unbreakable by horses. Due to the small size of the openings, slow feeding fostered natural grazing. As a consequence, your horse will be immune to ulcers, colic, and other digestive issues. It’s simple to stiffen and hang the bag. The bag features a large opening and strong straps to keep it closed while the animals feed. It is 22x10x28 inches and can contain 2 to 3 hay flakes. Once packed, this will keep your horse busy for many hours.

I'm very happy with the quick delivery---3 days before the projected date! This hay bag holds even more flakes than I expected and my horses are also happy with it.

Our opinion:

The revolutionary design of this feeder enables horses to eat as comfortably as possible. Unlike other feeders, this one allows the horse to eat from all four sides of the bag. This feeder also features excellent ventilation, ensuring that the supply remains fresh and dirt is easily removed. This function also aids in the removal of dust from hay, which is both unpleasant and harmful to your horse. This hay bag is likewise made of double-layered 1200D nylon, making it very robust. The bag has reinforced stitching and all straps are long-lasting.

Promising review:

I am impressed with this hay bag, it’s large enough to hold about three substantial sized flakes of hay if you really pack it in there. I don’t usually end up using the Velcro, as I fill it too full. I can load it on the fence rather than taking it down every time, which is a little tricky but doable. The clips and metal parts are nice quality and don’t get stuck, and the bag itself is showing very little wear and tear. So far it has held up well, I have had it several months and it’s used daily. The horse has never had a hay net/bag before and he hasn’t been frustrated with it at all. It has definitely cut down on wasted hay and extended the time the hay is front of the horse, which I think helps him stays entertained when he is in his stall.

Slow Feed Hay Net

Safe Material Hay Bag

price from
$14.89
Our opinion:

The small perforations in this horse feeding bag are great for allowing progressive feed distribution. Whether your horse eats slowly or swiftly, the net restricts the quantity of hay they may eat every hour. Furthermore, in order to maintain high standards of safety and animal health, the materials used are safe. This is more durable than cheap fabrics that are prone to chewing or ripping as the horse is pulling hay. The nylon fabrics are very long-lasting and dependable. Because there is no debris or dust, the overall net design is excellent. Because dust may cause a natural departure from the net, no particular measures are necessary.

Promising review:

My horses are doing well with these hay nets. I've bought a total of 6 so far, and I have noticed that the hay isn't going to waste all over the ground anymore. My horses nibble and nibble and savor every bite, it seems. Love these. They hold a lot of hay. I bought hooks to hang them with, and I knot the white string in half the length when I hang them. They work great for my Quarter horses and my Thoroughbred.

Slow Feed Hay Bag

No Waste Hay Bag

price from
$59.99
Our opinion:

This feeding bag allows your horse to eat like he’s grazing. The small bag openings allow for improved digestion. This feeding bag is safe for horses with feeding issues. This bag’s durability is one of its advantages. The nylon material can withstand horses grazing hard on it. The bag’s storage area is solid, but so are the straps. The small openings enable unwanted particles to pass through. Dust also has open air flow, preventing accumulation. The perfect shape of this bag ensures minimal waste while feeding.

Promising review:

Our horses were wasting too much hay with the metal hay racks. I thought it was our only option given the number of hay bags our warmblood gelding had destroyed. I took a chance on these hay bags and forked out the higher price. These bags are awesome. I have 4 and they are working perfectly. The horses love the more natural position and the hay waste is almost none! Time will tell if our destructive horse will start chewing through.,,,but he hasn’t yet which is amazing because he can destroy a cheap bag in one night.

Ultra Slow Feeder Hay Net

Ultra Slow Hay Bag

price from
$39.90
Our opinion:

This makes it a good choice for animals that are used to eating too rapidly or excessively. You won’t have to refill the Ultra Slow Feeder very often since it’s so enormous. The holes are also just the right size for older horses. It is easy to hang and clean, and it requires minimal time and effort. It also offers excellent value for money and a wide range of color choices. This is a challenging item. Even if the horse pulls or holds the net with its teeth, the net will not wear out soon.

Promising review:

I used this to make a slow feeder using a plastic barrel. It has been doing a great job and allows my horse just a little hay at a time. He grabs the whole net in his teeth and shakes it and then also nibbles at it with his lips and teeth. The net shows no wear and tear and performs great. I think it will last quite a while! I am impressed with the quality and the size of the openings are perfect for a slow feeder!

Our opinion:

This bag is 21x7x25′′ and can store a lot of feed for your horse. The food discharge ports are likewise set to allow relatively progressive hay outflow. As a result, the food intake of a fast-feeding horse is controlled. Filling food is effortless because to the small holes. Various items, including as alfalfa, grass, and dried hay, may also be readily filled. This bag is made to last a long time. They’re constructed of nylon fabrics and can sustain horse feed pulls. The bottom also has a reinforced mesh design to reduce dust accumulation. The hanging straps are well-made and sturdy. They allow the bag to be completely hung without breaking.

Promising review:

So far this hay feeder is easy to use. Top loading, opens wide to put flakes of hay in. I have a fat Haffie, and I needed a slow feeder that was easy to use, and didn't require me trying to stuff hay into it. I had a hay net, and it was so hard to fill and then I had to tie it up, and untie it when I used it. This has easy to use snaps and straps to hang it with. I have no problem putting the hay in the wide top. Very sturdy, I don't worry that it won't hold up:)
