If everything goes as planned, you won’t need to take your first-aid kit out of your bag. However, it is critical to practice careful risk management and injury prevention. As the first line of defense, have a well-stocked first-aid kit on hand. First aid kits come in a variety of sizes and styles, ranging from solo kits for day treks to items for weeklong group expeditions. We’ll show you what to include in your backpacking first aid kit, which medkits are worth your time, and which you can use in the field. Without further ado, let’s take a look at them!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Just in case you wonder...

Is it less expensive to make your own first aid kit?

Perhaps. However, some very specific or specialized products are included in the contents of a first aid kit. While assembling your own may be less expensive, it may not be practical owing to how difficult and time-consuming it may be.

Why should I get a first aid kit?

To treat minor injuries and respond to life-threatening emergencies, first aid kits should be prepared. These kits should be valued not just for addressing basic healthcare needs, but also for minimizing injuries until proper treatment is available.

Where should I keep a first aid kit?

According to the Mayo Clinic, first aid kits should be kept in both your house and personal car in order to properly react to accidents and emergencies. They should also be considered in circumstances where accidents might occur, such as hiking and camping.

How to shop for a first aid kit?

When selecting a first aid kit, consider who may rely on it (both in terms of the sheer number of people and the age and disposition of the user), where it will be kept and/or transported, and under what circumstances the potential users could sustain an accident or sickness. Any first aid box worth considering should include supplies for small cuts, punctures, burns, and other common injuries.

First Aid Kit

Best for budget

price from

Our opinion:

It is typically easier to begin by customizing a pre-made first aid pack. You run the danger, though, of not having all you need. This simple kit strikes a balance between preparedness and slimness. This tiny first aid kit avoids going overboard with goods and lowers the price, weight, and size to a minimum – all while providing basic outdoor needs. Everything else has a place. To reinforce the blister treatments, add some antibiotic ointment and mole foam.

Promising review:

I bought this as a little emergency kit for my hiking adventures. Super cute, lightweight, and has everything you need for minor cuts or accidents that you might get into on the trail. Super happy with this little kit.

Our opinion:

First Aid Only also doesn’t skimp on quantity, making this kit suitable for families or groups. For scraped knees, paper cuts, and other open wounds, more than 200 bandages and gauze pads of different sizes are available. This kit provides a greater assortment of medications and ointments than most all-purpose rivals, albeit the amounts of aspirin, ibuprofen, and non-aspirin acetaminophen are restricted to just six pills.

Promising review:

So i ordered two of these kits so i would have one in my truck and one in my hiking pack. The one in my hiking bag came in handy when we were 5 miles on top of a mountain and my dad split his head open on a tree branch. There were plenty supplies to stop the bleeding.

Our opinion:

Adventure Medical Kits’ first aid kit is specifically intended for short camping and hiking adventures. The equipment is very lightweight and portable, weighing less than half a pound. All of the supplies are sorted by injury type so you can easily identify what you need, whether it’s moleskin for blisters (a typical trekking injury) or itch treatment for insect bites. It also includes a variety of medications, bandages, gauze, and a wilderness first aid handbook.

Our opinion:

This kit comes at such a cheap price and with over 200 pieces inside. You’ll love the high-quality medical items, such as waterproof wound bandages. You’ll also get the addition of survival supplies that you wouldn’t generally see in this price range, such as fishing line and lures, a wire saw, and a firestarter. A considerate addition for overseas travelers is the inclusion of country-specific emergency phone numbers (police, hospital, and first-responders) on the front flap.

Promising review:

This is a gift for my son for Christmas, so he hasn't opened it yet. I imagine that he will be thrilled with this first aid and survival kit. He loves to go hiking and sometimes goes alone, so I will worry less when he takes this as his companion. Thanks for the speedy delivery and excellent packaging!

Our opinion:

Whether you’re kayaking through rapids or camping in damp conditions, the.7 is an excellent lightweight medical kit to carry in your bag. The kit’s contents are secured by a durable Dryflex waterproof back with a handy zipper for easy access. The seam-sealed silnylon back it stashes in gives added weather protection. You’ll find everything you need inside to treat wounds and prevent infection.

I carry this with me when I’m biking, hiking, camping and it gives me some peace of mind. Essential to have and lightweight!

Multiday Kit

price from
$37.95
Our opinion:

This kit isn’t too large for journeys where pack space is limited since it weighs just over 12 ounces and is the diameter of a ping pong paddle. However, it includes everything a small party needs for a weekend adventure. The clearly visible supply list on the rear of the vinyl shell was liked by testers, and each compartment is identified with its contents. The whole item folds up like a toiletry kit, making it easier to get everything you need in a hurry.

Promising review:

This is a well thought out kit. Heavy duty scissors which I use to cut out burrs that get tangled in my dogs hair. Extra storage vial is nice to pack your own medications. It even has room for a small roll of vet wrap. Overall I am pleased with this kit.

First Aid

Our opinion:

This thorough first aid kit is intended for a small company or to be hung on a wall at home. If you’re camping with a big company and don’t mind the 2.8 lb weight, you’ll be well prepared for your next adventure. It can accommodate 100 people, so it’s definitely overkilled for most excursions. It’s ideal if you manage a daycare or need to be able to treat your employees successfully before medical aid comes.

Promising review:

Just what the doctor ordered!!! All kidding aside, we have not had to use this First Aide Kit yet, but we are very pleased with its overall quality and the abundance of first aide supplies within it. I feel that we got a lot of medical first aide supplies for the dollars spent. And the case is high quality as well.

Our opinion:

The Ultralight/Watertight.9 medical kit has the first aid supplies you need in a kit that keeps water and the elements out, whether you’re camping, mountain biking, skiing, or canoeing. With this waterproof first aid pack, you’ll be able to travel light and quickly on multi-sport adventures lasting 1-4 days and involving 1-4 people. The kit has two layers of tough waterproofing protection, keeping the contents secure and dry even in the worst conditions.

9.
Surviveware
Premium Large First Aid Kit

Color-coded pick

price from
$115.95
Our opinion:

Surviveware has one of the best-organized and most complete first-aid kits for usage at home and in the outdoors. First, the compartments are color-coded: red (first aid), black (survival), green, and blue (hygiene). This makes it quick and simple to locate what you’re looking for. Second, in addition to materials for healing cuts and scrapes, this kit includes products to treat burns and fever. Finally, Surviveware comes with a slew of emergency-useful accessories, like a torch, knife, handsaw, multitool, poncho, and more.

Promising review:

The large First Aid kit is a well thought out, high quality and well organized answer to any first aid needs. I need a First Aid kit for Boy Scout camping and hiking, offshore boating and other remote travels, where you better have what you need with you... and I believe this to be the best First Aid kit on the market.

Our opinion:

Because not everyone is an expert in wilderness medicine, having a guidebook is a good idea. Irrigation syringes are useful for cleansing wounds or abrasions, and it’s lovely to see one here. The kit is pretty thorough, with materials to stop life-threatening bleeding from animal attacks to mistakes with that camping axe, as well as a waterproof trauma pack to give CPR, fix fractures, and cover burns.

Promising review:

[...] This our hiking/go-bag kit, so it mainly stays in the car, or in our closet. My family have very little training, so the guide is good reassurance if I happen to not be with them, or if I’m incapacitated in some way. Worth. Every. Penny.

Conclusion

The most crucial factor to consider when selecting a first aid kit is, of course, the products included inside the kit. If you want a well-rounded kit that can treat a wide range of injuries and illnesses, you’ll need both physical wound-care products and a selection of medication options. And believe it or not, our selected products above will not disappoint you!
