Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a electrical sander?
Smoothing, polishing, or cleaning a surface made of wood, plastic, or metal using a portable power tool. Sanders may also be used to roughen surfaces before they are finished. The disk sander, belt sander, and orbital sander are the three basic kinds of power sanders. Sander used sandpaper to help smooth the object’s surface.
How to operate sander?
When a sander is turned on, it vibrates a lot, making it easy to slide through wood as soon as you contact it. This results in a self-propelled motion that saves the operator time. Simply sand the surface gently back and forth, allowing the sander to perform the majority of the job. When you’re finished, brush off your work surface and use a tack cloth to remove any remaining sanding dust.
Does a sander need sandpaper?
Yes, sander needs sandpaper, but you cannot use any sandpaper for any sander. Instead of using a random sheet of sandpaper, most sanders have a preset form of sandpaper that must be utilized. Simply peel off the old sheet and push on the new one to replace the sandpaper on your sander. The pad is usually held in place by a velcro-like material on most sanders.
What does the grit type on sandpaper mean?
Sandpaper grit is a measurement of the size of the abrasive materials on the sandpaper. The greater the grit number, the finer the abrasive, and the smoother the surface finish. Coarser abrasives with lower grit counts scrape off things considerably faster. Choose the one that is suitable for your sander, because each sander has a different form of sandpaper.

SurfPrep
5″ Electric Ray Sanders
Brushless Electric Sander
Surfprep’s 5″ ‘brushless’ electric sander is the smallest, most operator-friendly, powerful, and energy-efficient random orbital sander on the market. At just 2.5 pounds, it’s a featherweight. Because the Ray plugs straight into an ordinary electric outlet, operators may sand ‘on-site.’ The tool’s power source is built-in, with a ‘direct wire’ design that makes setup and operation simple (no additional power supply box / connects straight into an outlet). Operating the 5″ or 6″ Ray for 4 hours per day, 240 days per year at $0.0007 kWh costs slightly over $20.00 per year. These tools come in 3/16″ and 3/32″ orbit sizes. To keep a clean working environment, there is a central vacuum option available. Ray’s cutting pace and power put it in a league of its own!

DEWALT
Random Orbit Sander, 5-Inch (DWE6421K)
All Around Orbit Sander
You can remove enormous quantities of wood using a random orbital sander and coarse grit sandpaper. Then, to create a finish-ready surface, go to finer (and finer) sanding discs. With 24-grit hook-and-loop sanding discs, a random orbit sander can swiftly remove wood. The sander’s 10,000-RPM+ design creates a rapid cutting motion that swiftly smooths any planned surface. Start with low-grit sandpaper and work your way up to at least 200 grit for your last pass.
I love it. Had my round sand paper ready when it arrived and went to work. Great sander, doesn't dig down since it orbits really well. Got a picnic table done so fast I couldn't believe it!

DEWALT
DEWALT 20V MAX XR Palm Sander
Excellent Palm Sander
After sanding with a random orbit sander, a palm sander is ideal for applying the final shine to wood. This wood sander also prepares wood for staining by using fine-grit sandpaper. You’ve probably used this sander before, but if not, it operates on the basic principle of clamping a “quarter” sheet of sandpaper. It’s ideally suited for placing the last pass on wood before applying finish because of its design.
I like this sander. It will take a smaller battery which makes it very light. If you use a larger battery it will last hours. The design that is used to hold the paper makes it easy to replace the sandpaper. Hold it firmly. Has a dust bag and a vacuum adapter but use the right vacuum if you are sanding drywall. A home vac should be okay for wood. Those small particles will ruin a vacuum so use a shop vac with a bag inside.

WEN
6321 7-Amp Corded Belt Sander
Excellent Wood Removal Sander
Any wood surface may be easily sanded smooth with a belt sander. This sander is used to prepare wood for final sanding since it might be too rapid at times. After running thousands of wood cabinet door panels through a planer, you may sand them flat using a belt sander. This sander can sand everything from face frames to door panels, as well as fitting cabinets and infill strips to walls. A big platen (metal surface between wood and sander) is preferred because of the aggressive design, however, a quality 421′′ is a challenge.
Great belt sander for the money...tip for those that like to use small shop vacuum to exhaust sanding dust:
Just zip open your dust bag and put your vacuum hose all the way into bag (over the interior bag support plastic holder)
Then rezip your bag tight around hose with a little duct tape to secure. Works great and eliminates having to always empty the small bag.

JET
JWDS-1632 Drum Sander
Excellent Drum Sander
A drum sander is an ideal purchase for most woodworkers if they are just getting started. This gadget will perfectly flatten everything you put through it. What about cutting boards? When using a planer, don’t be concerned about chip-out. You’ll obtain a beautiful finish if you feed your boards through with 24-grit. Cabinets with face frames? By just reversing the frame and running it twice, a 22′′ drum sander will handle them.
This is an excellent machine as long as you don't ask it to do more than it was intended for. Specifically, you should only try very small reductions in stock. Even 1/128th can be too much on a wide hard end-grain board. Take off a one quarter of a quarter turn and you will get good results.

WEN
6502T Disc Sander with Cast Iron Base
Precise Disc Sander
A power disc sander falls under the category of specialty sanders on the list of best wood sanders. A disc sander gives precise control for complicated or tiny sanding operations since you handle the board, not the sander. This is the sander for you if you have a lot of little parts in your projects or if you need to sand the end grain of small sticks accurately. Because you won’t have to hold the sander, you’ll be able to sand the wood with more precision.
wanted this mainly for the belt sander feature, I have a 12 inch disc sander already. The thing I find most useful is the ease of changing belts, and the belt tracking is great. You can stall out the motor, but if you let the sandpaper do its job its fine, there's no use in trying to force the machine. It creates a lot of dust even with a dust collection system hooked up so wearing a dust mask would be wise. great little machine without breaking the bank.

Bosch
ROS20VSC Palm Sander
Sander with Micro Filter
The fact that this sander has a variable sanding speed is one of the primary characteristics that set it apart from other excellent choices. You may work somewhere between 7,500 and 12,000 OPM. This gives you complete control over the sanding procedure. This sander also has an innovative microfilter dust collecting system, which is a distinguishing feature. It truly performs a fantastic job of filtering dust particles as small as half a micron. And when it’s time to clean up, all you have to do is twist off the dust pod and discard the residue.
Used sander for hours on some tough jobs sanding down walls in my garage and it worked great! Sucked up a good amount of the dust too. Other sanders I've owned used to throw all the dust into the air until the entire room was cloudy. Really happy with how it saved some mess. Just need to remember to empty the dust container when it fills. It was easy to handle on walls and ceiling... good power and maneuvered without issue. Looking forward to my next job with this sander!

Black+Decker
Random Orbit Sander, 5-Inch (BDERO100)
Affordable Orbital Sander
The BDERO100 is one of the best hand sanders for wood you can get if you’re new to DIY or have a little project in mind. It not only boasts a lot of features, such as random orbital action at 12,000 oscillations per minute, a dust-sealed switch, and a hook and loop mechanism for easy pad changing, but it’s also quite affordable. As a result, you receive a lot of value for your money. And, unlike some other manufacturers, the BDERO100 can work with almost any kind or brand of sandpaper as long as the pads are the same size. When you combine all of that with Black & Decker’s thorough 2-year guarantee, the value this sander gives per dollar spent is difficult to surpass.
I am tough on orbital sanders. In the last 2-3 years I have blown through two Skil sanders and one Dewalt. The Dewalt just plain gave out; one Skil quit on me, the other Skil broke and spewed dust all over me every time I used it. I didn't want to spend 100 bucks on a fancy sander, so I settled on this Black and Decker. After 4-5 months, it's still going strong. No complaints. I got the extended warranty so I am covered. The sander feels good in your hand. The price is right. Seems to be a solid product.

Went through 4 charges on the 3 AH batteries with 180 grit sand paper to prep the whole car for paint. Happy with the purchase! I attached the end of the sander to the vacuum to clean it out after the bag got full. I was surprised by how much dust the bag caught.

Bosch
3.3 Amp 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander
Durable Orbit Sander
The Bosch 3725DEV should certainly be on your radar if you’re searching for a more sturdy and durable sander to tackle the hardest assignments. First and foremost, this item is quite durable. The sander has a die-cast aluminum gearbox, as well as a dual-bearing mount for the sanding pads and additional grips for complete control. Furthermore, when it comes to the dust collecting system, Bosch made an excellent decision. The dust bin is located right under the main handle, ensuring that no dust particles will obstruct your work at any moment. It’s also worth mentioning that the bin is far bigger than the other versions on the market, allowing you to go longer between refills and speeding up your job.
WOW, this is the Cadillac of sanders. I refinish cabinets and this one paid for itself in a few days. Its a little more $ than the other ones but well worth it. Its powerful but very easy to control. I love the trigger on and off switch ,unlike my other two sanders , a Porta Cable and Milwaukee ,their on and off switch is hard to work. Those two sanders will be retired . Its also very easy to attach a shop vac hose to it making sanding almost 98% dustless. This is my first Bosch tool , it wont be my last.
