Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a crash cymbal?

A crash cymbal is a type of cymbal that produces a loud, sharp “crash” and is used mainly for occasional accents, as opposed to a ride cymbal. It can be mounted on a stand and played with a drum stick, or by hand in pairs.

What is a cymbal in music?

A musical instrument made out of a slightly concave spherical brass plate that is hit against another plate or beaten with a stick to produce a ringing or crashing sound.

Is a cymbal a drum?

Cymbals are utilized in a wide variety of ensembles, including the orchestra, percussion ensembles, jazz bands, heavy metal bands, and marching bands, among others. Drum kits are often comprised of at least three cymbals: a crash, a ride, or a crash/ride, and a pair of hi-hat cymbals. A cymbalist is a person who performs with cymbals on stage.

Why are cymbals called cymbals?

It is believed that the term cymbal (also known as cimbel or cymbel) originates from the Latin cymbalum (plural cymbala meaning a pair of cymbals), which in turn comes from the Greek kumbalon (cymbal) (cup).

Our opinion:

ZILDJIAN cymbals, which were developed in Turkey by Kerope Zildjian and introduced to the world in the nineteenth century, continue to astonish drummers today with their rich, warm, and expressive tones. It is made possible by the Zildjian alloy, which generates dark, flexible cymbals that are well suited to a wide variety of musical forms, including jazz and rock. It is via the use of sophisticated hammering and lathing procedures, as well as other techniques, that the K Series of cymbals pays respect to this legacy and attempts to replicate that iconic sound.

AA 18" Medium Crash Cymbal

Durable Medium Crash Cymbal

Our opinion:

The Sabian 18′′ Medium Crash is one of the larger-sized crash cymbals that you will most likely have in your kit, and it produces a colossal amount of sound for its size. The Sabian’s deep tone is rather dark, and it sounds fantastic when played in conjunction with other cymbals, since it provides both harmony and melody at the same time. Because of its sturdy structure, it is also a very long-lasting cymbal, so long that it is used by a large number of music schools.

Great-Sounding Cymbal

price from

Our opinion:

The Paiste Signature range has some of the greatest cymbals, and they clearly put a lot of thought into their product. Professional drummers assisted in the creation of the Signature cymbals, which were tasked with creating great-sounding cymbals. The Paiste Signature cymbal’s dry tone helps it transmit ride cymbal patterns while avoiding washy noises. It has a substantial feel to it, making it ideal for strong hitters. It will also assist you in developing your technique, but it will not assist you in concealing any discrepancies.

18" A Custom Medium Crash

Any Music Style Cymbal

price from
$314.95
Our opinion:

The “A” line cymbals have a somewhat darker finish than the “A custom” line’s bright polish. They’re both great-sounding cymbals, but they have quite distinct tones. Because it isn’t very brilliant or dark, the “A” Zildjian Medium Crash may be used for any music style. It’s basically a fantastic crash cymbal with a sound that goes with any kind of music. It’s ideal for performances and recording sessions.

Promising review:

This cymbal is awesome! I had actually gotten the 17" version but it sounded too much like a 16" Z that I already have, so I got this 18" and it is terrific! It's even cool to look at after you hammer it, the vibration motions so even and resilient.

Our opinion:

The 18′′ Soundcaster Custom Medium Crash by Meinl is one of various cymbal lines available for all musical types. It’s a midsize cymbal that sticks out from the crowd because to its high pitch and ability to cut through texture. The Meinl Soundcaster features a sleek appearance that blends in well with the rest of your gear. Despite its popularity among metal drummers, its medium weight and warmth make it an excellent option for any musical genre.

Tough HiHat Cymbal

price from
$299.99
Our opinion:

The Sabian AAX 14 Stage Hats are suitable for a wide range of musical styles, but they sound particularly well while performing strong metal or light jazz. They’re bright enough to pierce through any band, yet they’ll still mix in with the warmth of the room. Sabian provides a medium-weight top cymbal and a heavy-weight bottom cymbal with a dazzling finish that is attractive to the ear and the eye. The AAX 14 Stage Hats are among the best-sounding hi-hats on the market. They are very tough and can withstand a lot of hitting without breaking.

Promising review:

I recently purchased these hats after three years of drumming. Wanting to get serious about my kit I was looking for something with a pro level sound. Simply put compared to these everything else sounds like hitting a trash can. These hats have an extremely loud sound if they are open or closed, they just cut right through the air. The pitch is higher than most hats which is a personal preference of mine, they have a very bright sound. The sticks bounce off themEasily, they have a beautiful finish, and of course they're sabian so they're well made. Can't recommend these enough to serious drummers, if you can afford the price, if not I recommend the Xs20 hats, close to the same sound and half the price.

Signature Dark Crisp Hi-Hats 13"

Calm Jazz Cymbal

price from

Our opinion:

Dark and crisp, the Paiste Signature Dark Crisp hi-hat cymbals sound great. They come in two sizes, 13 and 14 inches. The 13 inch is suitable for calm jazz. This pair of medium and heavy cymbals can nevertheless provide a tight click sound. Stick tip sound articulate and sharp on top cymbal. The Paiste hi-hats offer a nice professional sound, but can also go filthy with jazz. They are sturdy and suitable for everyday play.

Promising review:

I tried many hihats, this was the best 13" pair for my taste. For rock and roll, I exchange the top for a K-Custom Dark. For orchestral, I use this pair top and bottom.

Our opinion:

The Meinl MB20 Heavy Soundwave 14-inch pair delivers a powerful sound that suits metal bands nicely. They effortlessly cut through the loud metal music with their lengthy sustain and high pitch. They have a lot of energy and a bright sound that cuts through metal or hard rock. MB20 Heavy Soundwave The hi-hats feature a sparkling gloss that contributes to their brilliance on stage. They are hefty and durable cymbals. No way they’ll break.

HH 21" Raw Bell Dry Ride Cymbal

Dry Vintage Cymbal

price from
$529.99
Our opinion:

The Sabian 21 HH Raw Bell Dry Ride is a one-of-a-kind cymbal that produces a dry, raw sound with plenty of warmth and tone. This is a large cymbal with a dark tone that sounds similar to a vintage cymbal. It has a lot of flavor that you won’t find in other cymbals since it’s hand-hammered. The unlathed bell cuts provide articulation and give the cymbal a distinct appearance.

Promising review:

Pretty heavy in weight. Great sounding dry ride! This is my first Hand Hammered Sabian cymbal ever. And with the sound I get, I will be getting more. Excellent stick sound with not a lot of overtones. It cuts through my band's loud guitars and other instruments. I am very happy with this purchase.

Conclusion

It’s critical to have a good pair of cymbals as a drummer. Every genre works nicely with most cymbals since they are loud and brilliant. On the other hand, if you choose unsuitable cymbals, everything can fall short of the tone the band requires.
