This f/2.8 version is substantially more expensive, but it sets a new standard for a wide-angle zoom lens for Sony mirrorless cameras. When mounted on a full-frame mirrorless camera like the Alpha A7R IV, it’s a huge lens that’s substantially bigger than the f/4 version, but it balances and handles nicely. The image quality is as expected, and the smooth, fast, and silent focusing is a delight to use. This lens isn’t for everyone, but if you want the best wide-angle lens for your Sony camera, this is it.

It’s also an excellent choice if you want the best of both worlds: it has enough zoom for close-ups and broad images, but not so much that it makes the other ranges worthless. On a full-frame camera, the image stabilizer makes it good in low light, and the weight is proportionate to its size. On an APC-C camera like the Canon T3i or Nikon D5500, it may feel almost as weighty as a lens with a zoom range of roughly 10x.

The Sony 10-18mm is a fantastic complement for slim-line A6000-series bodies since it is very tiny and weighs only 225g. The 10-18mm zoom range isn’t very extensive, but it covers a wide range of focal lengths, equivalent to 15-27mm in full-frame terms. Autofocus based on stepping motors is rapid and nearly quiet in operation. There’s no physical focus distance scale, and the manual focus ring is electrically rather than mechanically attached, as is typical of this sort of device.
