10 Reviews: Best Blu Ray Horror Movies (Apr 2024)

A film does not have to be old to be called a classic, and no horror film exemplifies this point more than Get Out. Despite the fact that Jordan Peele’s feature film directorial debut was just a few years ago, Get Out was a great horror picture from the moment it was released. Because the film is so new, the extra features on the Blu-Ray are rather extensive, and because it is such a unique viewpoint and fresh take on the whole horror genre, hearing Jordan Peele’s own thoughts and insights into the making of his film is more than worthwhile.

It may come as a surprise given that The Exorcist is now one of the most famous and globally appreciated horror pictures of all time, but the creation of the film and the final cut that was seen by the world did not proceed as planned. As a consequence, The Exorcist’s Blu-Ray DVD contains two versions of the film: the theatrical version and the restored director’s cut. And since The Exorcist was a picture that relied heavily on creative cinematic technique, the special features that explain how they accomplished it are interesting.

Although this movie came out when I was 15 I just watched if for the first time. So my experience of it is not colored by nostalgia. Although it doesn't have all the jump scares of a modern horror movie it is a great piece of film making which has aged well. If you have never watched it I highly recommend you do so.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a rather bare-bones release in terms of Blu-Ray releases of iconic horror films. Seeing the film in all of its restored brilliance is really wonderful to witness, despite the DVD’s lack of genuine extras. Many people believe that since the original film was deliberately lo-fi, a digital cleaning of the graphics and sound would be pointless, yet it actually makes the film scarier. And it’s worth the money simply to watch the outtakes, which will prove to you once and for all that this isn’t just a documentary about a bunch of insane cannibals.

This is a huge improvement from the special edition DVD I have. With older horror films like this, Blu-ray remasters can be hit or miss taking away some the grimyness and authenticity of the optimal film, making it look so good looking that it cleans to much of the film up. Thankfully they properly mastered this to look like it was intended.

The Silence of the Lambs Blu-ray/DVD from the Criterion Collection is a genuinely remarkable version of this absolutely great film. Although it’s almost impossible to improve on The Silence of the Lambs’ excellence, the digital restoration and more than half an hour of deleted sequences make this a Blu-Ray well worth the money. Of course, the audio commentary with director Jonathan Demme and performers Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, both living giants, is fascinating.

One of the all-time greatest thrillers, Silence of the Lambs will leave your heart pounding. The performance by Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lechter is one of the all time greatest, and will hook you in even with his limited screen time. The dark atmosphere permeating the movie perfectly sets up the darkness of the story and the villain, and does not let you go until it's over.

Jaws is unquestionably one of the most iconic and immensely loved horror films of all time, and director Steven Spielberg’s movie magic was so incredible that it’s still legendary today. Unsurprisingly, this fantastic film is accompanied by an even better Blu-Ray release. In addition to the film, the Blu-Ray includes over a dozen bonus features that cover almost every element of the development and distribution of the picture. The film is required watching for every horror or general film enthusiast, and the Blu-Ray version is required ownership for any Jaws fan.

My 7 year old son is fascinated by all things sharks and loves the Jaws movies. He was very excited to get this movie for Christmas. Usually movies that were made in the 70’s/80’s look so cheesy and fake when compared to today’s movies, but Jaws remains awesome despite being nearly 43 years old. The shark looks real, and the movie is still just as suspenseful and thrilling as it was to me when I was a kid. Nothing cheesy looking about it.

A 4K enhanced scan of Hideo Nataka’s “Ringu” is included in this limited-edition compilation. A reporter investigates a strange cassette that kills anybody who plays it in the 1998 Japanese horror film that inspired “The Ring.” The limited-edition collector’s package contains an HD restoration of the picture, as well as audio commentary and interviews with directors, film experts, and critics, as well as other supplementary materials.

I bought this originally as a 4 disc set on DVD years ago. It was worth the buy then. And this set is worth the buy now. Arrow Video, as usual, does its usual great job. 3 Blu-ray discs. 4 movies. Great picture/video upgrade/restoration. Lossless audio. Prior editions extras and new extras. All the way around. this is a great special edition!!

Stanley Kubrick was known for his rigid filming technique and crazy attention to detail, which is why The Shining, his single effort into horror filmmaking, is still widely considered to be the finest horror picture ever produced. It’s hard to believe that anybody who considers themselves a horror enthusiast hasn’t already seen this picture, but the extras that come with the Blu-Ray DVD make it well worth the money. There are many featurettes covering various parts of the film’s production, as well as a documentary about the film’s production.

Too many reviews here, few of which are about the new 4K and Blu-ray, so let me just say that this new transfer beats the old Blu-ray by several miles. The film is the film. I think even Mr. Kubrick would have been pleased by this disc. Color is very accurate and the detail, while maybe not completely consistent, is mostly incredible.

The film “Pet Sematary” is based on Stephen King’s 1983 book of the same name. The premise of the 1989 horror film revolves around a father who buries his family cat at a cemetery in order to resurrect him, but the cat emerges from the dead with a new wicked mentality. The original classic “Pet Sematary” is included in this two-movie box, as well as the 2019 remake, which follows the family from the first film as they relocate to a new state.

I liked Tonic in Pet Cematary. He gave scary thrills! I didn't dislike anything in the movie. I used the 4K Bluersy combo pack for increased technology.

It is almost impossible that you haven’t watched the scream movie. Whether they already watched or not, at least everyone may be familiar with the Ghostface, the main antagonist serial killer of this movie. Now, you can relive the classic slasher horror masterpiece directed by Wes Craven himself. Before watching this blu ray set, remember, don’t answer the phone, don’t open the door, and don’t try to escape!

A lot of Blu-ray double-dips don't impress me. They look good but the initial release looked fine, too. This is a clear exception. Not only does the new Blu-ray of Scream look and sound terrific, it is far better than the original release. After watching the new disc tonight - and being extremely impressed - I popped in the initial disc for comparative purposes. The difference is night and day. If you are a fan of Scream, get this Blu-ray now.
