If your neighborhood is home to a variety of birds, you will undoubtedly enjoy watching them flock and perch in your garden. Choosing the best bird seed, on the other hand, is one of the most effective strategies to attract them. But, shopping for birdseed can be perplexing, especially if you are new to the world of backyard bird feeding. This is due to the fact that there are several bird species, each with its unique set of dietary desires and requirements. Discover what your favorite birds prefer, and you’ll be able to attract more of them to your backyard feeder for both their and your delight. Our list of Best Bird Food to Attract Colorful Birds will assist you in locating the best one.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In case you don't know...

What should I put on my bird feeder?

When purchasing bird food, look for a nice mix of peanuts, seeds, and live food such as mealworms and waxworms. Then you should be able to offer something to all of the birds. Sunflower seeds, broken peanuts, flaked maize, and smaller seeds like millet should all be included in good ready-made mixtures.

How do birds know when you have put food out?

Although certain birds, such as parrots, kiwis, and vultures, have a keen sense of smell and will utilize their olfactory glands to locate food, most birds rely on vision to do so. When a bird finds a food source, it may call to its partner or, if there is enough food to go around, to other members of its flock.

How often should I change bird food?

To avoid mold, bacteria, or bugs in the feeders, change the seed in a dry seed feeder every 5-7 days, and always wash your hands after handling bird supplies and feeders.

What time of day do birds feed?

As soon as the sun comes up in the morning. Wild birds begin eating about 7:00 a.m. from spring through summer. During the autumn and winter seasons, it is later in the morning - say, 8:00am to 9:00am. Since common garden birds are not nocturnal, they cannot see in low light.

Kaytee
Seed & Mealworm Treat Cake

Excellent Treat Cake

price from
$7.26
Our Opinion:

The Kaytee Seed & Mealworm Treat Cake is an excellent way to attract bluebirds and woodpeckers. It's made of Hulled Sunflower Seed, Oil Sunflower Seed, Safflower Seed, Dried Mealworms, Gelatin, Dextrose, Honey, and Glycerin. This treat cake, on the other hand, is very convenient and does not melt easily in the snow or rain, making it ideal for attracting birds to your backyard.

Promising Review:

At least, that's what the birds say. I have a few different feeding stations setup now, and the birds have gone pretty crazy over this cake. Also attracted a large squirrel, so guess it's loved by all my backyard critters. It's taking them a little while to finish this one off (it's a huge seed cake), but when they are done, I'll buy another since they appear to love it.

Finch Small Songbird Wild Bird Mix

All-Natural Ingredients Food

price from
$9.57
Our Opinion:

Lyric has another excellent wild bird food choice. This is a bird mix made especially for finches. Canary seed, canola seed, nyjer seed, golden millet seed, and sunflower kernels are all-natural, filler-free components used on this food. The seed is fresh, and the birds will enjoy it.

Promising Review:

This mix attracts a ton of little birds to my yard. I always have a handful of finches on my feeders when I use this mix. The seeds are so small they tend to fall through the cracks of the feeder and even the thistle socks, though!

Our Opinion:

Lyric Wild Bird Food is a premium brand made by a family-owned and managed company of bird lovers in small batches. This high-energy nut and fruit combination has no fillers and is composed entirely of natural ingredients. Chickadees, robins, orioles, blue jays, titmice, buntings, cardinals, grosbeaks, towhees, nuthatches, and Cedar Waxwings love this delicious blend.

Promising Review:

Lyric fixed the problem with the weird webs and insects that were infesting this bird feed. It is back to my go to feed for the larger birds, especially woodpeckers, jays, and grosbeaks. The squirrels love it, too! 😁

Peanut Butter Suet Cake Wild Bird Food (6 Packs)

Excellent Formulation Suet Cake

Our Opinion:

If you want to attract woodpeckers to your feeders, this Pine Tree Farms Suet Cake is probably the best option. It also works well for other suet-loving birds. Render beef suet, chopped peanuts, and peanut butter are the main ingredients (yummy). This is, without a doubt, one of the best suet cakes on the market. It attracts a diverse range of birds and contains no fillers.

Promising Review:

I like the ingredients. I can’t deal with worms.
No fillers. The birds found it quickly.

I am buying these again and again. My birds love them!

Sunflower Kernels Wild Bird Food

Protein and Lipids Contained

price from
$49.78
Our Opinion:

This Lyric Sunflower Kernels is a great no-mess option for attracting as many birds as possible to your yard. The kernels in this birdseed are the heart of the “meat” of black oil sunflower, which is the most popular wild bird food. This food is excellent since it contains the protein and lipids that birds need.

Promising Review:

This was a good change for the birds plus then you don't have all the sunflower hulls every where.

Block Food

price from
$10.76
Our Opinion:

It comes in the form of a block of birdseed that you can simply place on your deck or porch. As a result, you won't need a bird feeder to feed the birds this food. It attracts a variety of species, from jays and finches to grosbeaks and cardinals. However, it is important to note that some of the blocks may include various seed mixes--some may contain a combination of fruits and nuts, while others may contain just nuts and seeds.

Promising Review:

It did the trick of the starlings eating all my bird food. The songbirds love it and cardinals, and nuthatches... So I will be reordering this again.

Nyjer Seed Premium Wild Bird Food

Tiny Seed

price from
$19.98
Our Opinion:

Small songbirds, such as the beautiful yellow, black, and white American goldfinch, love tiny black nyjer seed, often known as thistle seed. Since the seed is so tiny, it's usually served from thistle or sock feeders, which are specially intended to dispense seeds without allowing larger "bully" birds to hog all of the food.

Promising Review:

I bought this seed for the finches in my neighborhood. They fight for perches on my feeder. They are devouring the seeds as fast as I can fill it.

Greatest Variety Wild Bird Food

Excellent Formulation Seed

price from

Our Opinion:

Wagner's Greatest Variety Wild Bird Food is a buffet for finches, chickadees, cardinals, jays, titmice, sparrows, woodpeckers, and juncos alike, with lots of black oil sunflower, striped sunflower seeds, sunflower chips, white millet, red millet, cracked corn, red milo, nyjer, peanut kernels, canary seed, and safflower. It includes some seeds that are less popular or often squandered, but the rest are crowd-pleasers.

Promising Review:

Boy, this is going fast! I put out one bag in my feeders and it's gone in about 2-3 days. The birds absolutely love this. That makes me feel good, so of course I'll keep buying it. Glad I purchased a few bags.

Audubon Park
Black Oil Sunflower Seed Wild Bird Food

Thin Shell Seeds

price from
$33.81
Our Opinion:

The Black Oil of Audubon Sunflower seed is made especially for wild birds and comes in a 10-pound bag. It is great to attract Titmice, grosbeaks, cardinals, woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, and finches. Due to the obvious thin shell of these seeds, various kinds of birds may easily carry and open them. That means your birdies will need to put minimal effort to eat these seeds.

Promising Review:

I love this stuff for my wild birds. They love it also.
I have a big fatty squirrel who also loves this stuff and will eat all I put out in one sitting.

Conclusion

The most important thing to keep in mind while selecting bird food is that not all birdies prefer seed. So, if you want a variety of birds to flock to your garden, you'll need to fill your feeder with different sorts of food. Before you buy seed, you need also to consider the species of birds you wish to attract. A blend will suffice, but make sure it contains an abundance of the seeds chosen by the species you want to see at your feeder. Hope our list above helps you. Good luck!
