Regardless of light levels, having the red blinker working its magic at the back of your bike is still advised, even if the long winter nights are gone – at least in the northern hemisphere. Because drivers are sometimes tired and visibility is often poor in the mornings/early nights, turning on the bike’s rear light before leaving the curb is still strongly advised. Here are some of the finest bike tail lights on the market to keep you safe on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is a bike light necessary?

There are currently no federal restrictions requiring the use of bicycles equipped with lights in the United States. So the decision is entirely up to you. It is strongly advised that cyclists increase their visibility by using headlights and taillights when riding during the day and at night, respectively.

What is a bike light?

Bicycle lighting is light attached to bicycles with the primary goal of increasing the visibility of the bicycle and its rider to other road users in low-light conditions. Lighting reflective materials like cat’s eyes and traffic signs serve a secondary purpose. A third aim may be to light the road so that the rider can see where the rider is going. Serving the latter purposes necessitates a much higher luminous flux and, as a result, a greater amount of power.

Can bike light appears too bright?

Bike lights (both front and rear) might seem to be too bright and cause people to become visually impaired if they are not used in a suitable setting and are not positioned correctly. In addition to being distracting to cars, bikes, and pedestrians, this is potentially hazardous to your own safety.

How many lumens do I need for my bike light?

It all depends on how fast you go. An average trail rider will probably be alright with a minimum of 200 lumens; optimal is between 250 and 400 lumens. Some riders can travel pretty fast offroad at night, but anything brighter over 400 lumens doesn’t help them go faster, but it can shorten their battery life.

Our opinion:

The SeeMee 200 features a rear-facing light as well as a downward-facing dome-shaped light. The goal is to create a red circle on the road below you to increase safety and visibility. The light also has a braking sensor that illuminates the light when you hit the brakes hard, signaling to others behind you that you’ve slowed down significantly. Of course, all of these features mean that the lamp isn’t the cheapest on the market, but the added security looked like a brilliant concept and well worth the additional money.

Promising review:

Ride around in your own personal halo! The downward facing LED of the Magicshine Seemee 200 illuminates the ground around you and packs a number of smart features to boot.

District+ Rear Light

Sheer Visibility Rear Bike Light

price from
$85.50
Our opinion:

The Hope District Plus is one of the brightest rear lights available, and it wins this category because, in addition to its sheer visibility, it’s powered by a separate battery, allowing for long run durations. Hope boasts 15 to 200 hours of battery life depending on mode, so it’ll last you a whole night on high power or weeks of commuting on low. It may also be used as part of a system with Hope’s R2 or R4 Plus front units providing illumination.

Promising review:

The BEST rear light available by a HUGE margin. Offensively bright on the brightest setting (too bright to use at night -on full power it would be rather anti social). The battery lasts ages and the build quality is excellent. This one was purchased to replace an 8 year old District+ that packed up last week. I can't complain at that having almost daily use for 8 years!! Top job!

Our opinion:

You get a strong 75-lumen maximum output, as well as six burn duration options ranging from 3 hours in the brightest static mode to 24 hours in the lowest flash mode, as well as a DayBright pulse mode. This device has a great feature of adjusting to the current light circumstances and flaring up when it detects the rider is braking. However, there is now a new feature to consider. It’s called Peloton, and it detects when a front bike light is behind you and dims itself to avoid blinding the cyclist ahead of you.

Promising review:

Fits nicely under the saddle. Almost invisible, bar the crazy brightness of course. Nicely crafted aluminium body and waterproof port. I bought it as a day-bright light and it fits the bill perfectly.

CAT EYE
TL-LD610 LED Rear Light

Classic Rear Light

price from
$24.95
Our opinion:

TL-LD610 is a classic that is still going strong. It contains five moderately bright LEDs and is powered by a pair of AAA batteries, which are included. Because of the manner in which the illuminated LED sweeps over the screen, it is particularly effective as an around-town attention-grabber. Because you can connect a USB connection to all of the other lights, you will never have to worry about running light on batteries again. Any gas station, supermarket, or corner store should be able to provide you with a pair of AAAs.

Promising review:

Really good light. I have this mounted horizontally on the seatpost just below a seat bag. I have this on day and night in the "random flashing" mode to grab attention. Works on 2 AAA batteries so it will work for a long as you have spares. Price was very reasonable.

Garmin Varia Rearview Bike Radar RVR315 - Best Bike Tail Light for Daytime: Smart Rear Bike Light

Garmin
Varia Rearview Bike Radar RVR315

Smart Rear Bike Light

price from
$159.98
Our opinion:

When the Garmin Varia Radar detects traffic coming from behind at a distance of 140 meters, it automatically adjusts its brightness and flashing pattern to alert vehicles that you’re approaching. Meanwhile, compatible Garmin computers – Edge 1000, 820, and 520 – or an optional, rather bulky radar device provide an auditory alert if cars approach from behind at a high rate, as well as a visual prompt. Multiple oncoming cars may be shown on the computers, each with its own relative speed of approach and ‘danger level.’ Although this is probably more complicated than most people desire, Radar technology may be a lifesaver on pitch dark rural roads.

Promising review:

Lots of reviews will tell you how great this is for letting you know what’s coming up behind. What it’s also good for is letting you know if you need to take more road, say to prevent dangerous passes from the sort of terrible drivers the UK is full of. I’m not sure I could ride alone without it now. It’s a bit bulky but my god it’s useful.

VIZ 450 Rear Light

All Around Visibility Rear Light

1  visitors like this
price from

Our opinion:

Although the entire strength of Cateye’s Viz 450 rear light is reserved for an intermittent flash in the ‘Daytime Hyperflash’ mode, the light may cast an incredibly brilliant beam. It combines Cateye’s previous Rapid versions’ all-around visibility with a concentrated beam that can be seen from hundreds of meters away. The Daytime Hyperflash mode switches to Entire Rave, with all five LEDs flashing at varying rates and the full 450 lumens being deployed once per second or so.

Promising review:

Only had it a month but thought i'd post now as there are no other reviews. This thing is exceptionally bright in it's Daytime HyperFlash mode, perfect for bright sunny days. Group Ride mode is also very bright but without the harsh strobe flash - I use this mode when it's overcast or getting towards evening and light levels are dropping (haven't used it in a group as yet). The 40lumen flash is bright enough not just for full darkness but also dusk.

Flare RT Rear Bike Light

Bluetooth Connection Rear Light

2  visitors like this
price from

Our opinion:

The Flare RT features a specially designed focus and flash pattern for daytime usage since Bontrager was one of the first manufacturers to pioneer daytime bike lights. This, paired with the light’s sheer intensity, allows it to be seen from up to 2 kilometers distant in its most intense setting. You may also select between 45-lumen and five-lumen flash modes, as well as 25-lumen and five-lumen steady-state modes. The Flare RT has one basic objective — to keep you visible on the road – but it’s also a clever tiny light. When the battery level hits 5%, the power-saver mode kicks in, giving you an extra 30 minutes of runtime, while Ant+ and Bluetooth Smart connection let you to link the light with your Garmin PC.

Promising review:

The Bontrager Flare taillight provides excellent visibility and range. Be seen much sooner with this unique flash strobe pattern that sets you apart from all the tailights and other urban distractions. Can be paired to Garmin or a Bontrager computer for auto on settings and battery alert.

Nebula USB Rear Light

Mini Lightweight Rear Light

price from
$30.49
Our opinion:

This sleek little package may provide too much light for a rear light, which will never be an issue for individuals who ride in groups often, but the Moon Nebula’s super-bright LEDs are ideal for riders who wish to alert nearby motorists to their presence. The day flash mode has a lesser brightness to save battery power but still provides adequate visibility, whilst the flashing night mode has a maximum output of 180 lumens.

Promising review:

I bought both the front and rear Moon Nebula lights. Without question, the best lights I have bought over the last 20 years. Well designed, good looking and high quality materials. I can recommend this product without hesitation.

See.Sense
ACE Rear Light

Rear Light with Theft Alarm

price from
$54.99
Our opinion:

Consider the See. Sense to be a little computer for the rear of your bike, rather than simply a bunch of LEDs since it has enough smart capabilities to warrant the higher-than-average price. It links to a smartphone and a custom app to provide low-battery notifications and charging indications to your device, and GPS is utilized to change the brightness and flash pattern at busy intersections. It installs using a simple tool-free method and has a run duration of up to 15 hours or 2-3 hours at the maximum brightness of 250 lumens. Oh, and it’s a theft alarm, too, but that requires you to leave the light connected to the bike while it’s parked.

Promising review:

This rear light replaced one I lost when it fell off my bike. I Tried to wait and see if it was found, but knew I wanted one. This came quickly and easy to connect to the app. Great light with variable brightness and blink style.

LEZYNE
Strip Drive Pro 300Lm Rear Cycling Light

Sleek Design Rear Light

2  visitors like this
price from
$43.99
Our opinion:

The Lezyne Strip Drive Pro achieves maximum power and brightness by stacking five ultra-high-output LEDs into one retina-scorching module. A Mode Memory feature restores the device to the chosen mode even after turning it off, and nine combined lumen and flash settings, including the very visible 300-Lumen Daytime Flash mode, make it suitable for most journeys. However, because of the high power output, the battery life isn’t the longest. It also has a one-of-a-kind aero and round post compatible design, making it ideal for those sleek carbon fiber racing bikes popular with the nighttime club ride crowd.

Promising review:

I wanted a REALLY BRIGHT daytime running light. This is a great light for that purpose. It is super easy to attach and detach from your bike. The charging requires no cord; the usb connection is built-in, which is really nice if you are like me and have lot of devices that need recharging! I feel a lot safer riding with this light.
