It may appear simple to find a good base layer to wear while riding your bicycle since there are a plethora of options on the market, but there is one factor to consider: comfort. They can not only add a layer of warmth when paired with the best cycling jerseys, but they can also improve your performance all year by regulating your body temperature and managing moisture build-up to keep you feeling fresh throughout your ride. To assist you in your search, we have compiled a list of the ten best base layers for cycling that are well-known for their ability to protect your body. Here we go!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In case you don't know

What is the purpose of a base layer?

A base layer that acts as a second skin, protecting your real skin from cold and even the sun. It is a garment or layer that is closest to your skin and provides warmth while absorbing and evaporating sweat to keep you warm and comfortable.

What makes a good base layer?

A base layer should be snug enough to trap air next to the skin and insulate the body from cold temperatures. The cold is more likely to enter if there are gaps between the fabric and your skin, that’s why it’s better to choose a base layer size you normally wear because they are made slightly smaller with this in mind.

Can you wear two base layers?

Absolutely, yes. Wearing two base layers is socially acceptable, normal, and safe as long as you feel comfortable. It usually does while out in such cold weather since you need extra protection from the cold.

Is merino wool a good base layer?

Merino wool is high-quality wool derived from merino sheep, which are found primarily in New Zealand. It’s a great fabric for active base layers because it’s soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and naturally odor-resistant. However, some brands combine it with other materials to increase the durability of the base layer itself, which is also something to consider.

Gore Wear Windstopper Base Layer Shirt - Best Base Layers for Cycling: Breathable Base Layer

1.
Gore Wear
Windstopper Base Layer Shirt

Breathable Base Layer

price from
$80.00
Our opinion:

Breathability is an important feature to look for in a base layer, and this one could be an excellent choice for you. Even though it’s lightweight, you won’t be bothered by the wind because it has a Windstopper membrane to keep you protected while cycling. The fabric used is soft and won’t chafe or irritate your skin, and it wicks and dries quickly for all-day comfort.

Promising review:

I have two of these. They are pretty effective at keeping me comfortable - depending on what I am wearing it under. Like most of the WindStopper products, this one has denser fabric in front and more breathable fabric in the back. By the time I finish my ride and pull off my jersey, this thing is soaking wet, but you don't realize that while riding because it is pretty effective at keeping me feeling dry.

UPF 50+ Base Layer

price from
$64.00
Our opinion:

Many people prefer base layers with thumbholes since they help keep the sleeves in place while still allowing for freedom of movement. One of them is this one. The premium material will wick away your sweat, allowing it to evaporate faster. It is labeled as a UPF 50+ base layer, making it ideal for workouts in the sun.

Promising review:

Love this top! I wear it mostly for sun protection on warm days, and it's light enough to be comfortable even when it's quite warm outside. Wore for a 5-mile hike this morning and worked great, and the pale pink color doesn't show sweat (a huge priority for me!). I'm 5'5", 120 lbs, 34AAA, and size small is great if a touch long (but didn't bother me). Will probably buy more, especially if they're on sale . . .
