Goldfish are known for eating or digging up aquatic plants, which is unfortunate since living plants are both attractive and helpful, as they may consume the harmful compounds created by fish waste. Thankfully, we’ve discovered a few plant varieties that are both simple to care for and sturdy enough to withstand your goldfish’s nibbling. Here we go!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In case you don't know...

How do you take care of aquatic plants?

Aquatic plants thrive when exposed to 10 to 12 hours of light every day. Leaving the light on for an extended period of time will not compensate for the poor lighting. It's also critical to maintaining a regular day/night cycle. To ensure a regular photoperiod, utilize a timer or digital power center if your aquarium light doesn't even have a built-in timer.

How do you look after live aquarium plants?

They, need regular water changes to help control algae. A healthy substrate, frequent dosing with aquatic plant fertilizer, plant growth-enhancing lighting, and CO2 injection are all ideal ways for any freshly planted aquatic plant to thrive.

How long can Aquatic plants stay out of water?

Most aquarium plants may survive for 2 to 3 days without water if their leaves are kept wet. Wrapping your aquarium plants in damp paper towels is an easy way to keep them hydrated.

Do aquatic plants clean water?

Aquatic plants are essential for keeping a healthy water garden or pond. They not only absorb CO2 and release oxygen into the water, thereby enhancing the habitat for fish, but they also collect minerals from the water. This fertilizer decrease results in cleaner water and fewer algae.

The Sun Ave Bacopa Monnieri Moneywort

Delicate flowers for interesting tank

price from
$7.95
Our Opinion:

Bacopa monnieri, sometimes known as Moneywort, is an excellent aquatic stem plant that can be cultivated emersed or totally submerged. It blooms in small, delicate flowers that provide a splash of color and interest to the tank. Although some goldfish find the sensitive leaves delicious, most goldfish will ignore Bacopa monnieri. It grows best in moderate to high light, but it doesn't need any particular care other than periodic trimming.

Gorgeous plant ! Came really green, and in a nice thick bundle. The roots were nice and long! The plant settled really nice in my 5 gallon and started shooting right up so it’s a great background plant, nice and tall!

Jungle Val

Excellent low-light plant

Our Opinion:

Look no farther than Vallisneria for a tall, grassy plant that is nearly goldfish-proof. Vallisneria comes in a range of sizes, with the biggest reaching up to 6 feet in height. However, it won't grow above the waterline and instead floats softly over the surface of the water, blocking light from other plants. It's an excellent low-light plant, yet when the light level drops, the plant may grow taller as it stretches for more light.

Promising Review:

This is another fun and easy plant for the beginning aquarist! In my experience, when transit to the new environment. I’m using Greenpro tabs really recommended to try. (like i do) so be careful when using in a small tank, be sure to crack it and/or put less at first to let your val get used to the ferts. Cheers!!!

Live Hornwort

Quick growth plant

price from
$9.99
Our Opinion:

Hornwort is a very popular aquatic plant, which is reasonable. This plant grows quickly and can grow up to ten feet tall, making it perfect for big tanks and even ponds. However, since it doesn't grow much above the waterline, you won't wind up with a 10-foot-tall plant in your living room. It grows quickly, it will most likely grow back before your goldfish can consume it all.

Very healthy plant, started growing in my aquarium right away. Good value for the money.

Amazon Sword - Echinodorus Bleheri

Removing excess nitrates

price from
$37.99
Our Opinion:

For goldfish tanks, the Amazon Sword is a popular option. They can grow to be very large (up to 2 feet tall!) and are particularly effective at removing excess nitrates from the water. Root tab fertilization (Seachem Flourish tabs are a good alternative) is advised for a nutrient-hungry goldfish plant.

Promising Review:

Excellent, outstanding, well done, it was here much quicker than expected, packaging was perfect, the plant was large and healthy, wow if only more companies operated this way.

Dark Red Ludwigia

Fast-growing plant

Our Opinion:

Ludwigia is well-liked by aquarists due to its lovely variegated coloring. It's a fast-growing plant that gives plenty of protection for fish and fries while also benefiting the environment of your aquarium by producing a lot of oxygen.  Its leaves are durable enough to withstand the assaults of most goldfish and will provide a lovely touch to any fish aquarium.

Promising Review:

Love this plant! It is beautiful in my 40 breeder! I love how it is growing so tall that it is covering the surface of the aquarium! I have even cut it and re-planted in another aquarium!

Anubias Plant

Low maintenance plant

price from
$21.62
Our Opinion:

Anubias is without a doubt the greatest goldfish plant. It comes in several types and takes very little particular treatment to keep it alive, with thick, rubbery leaves that can withstand even the most hungry of goldfish. Larger, slimmer kinds are less likely to try to consume them, but they may nibble on the new leaves. They may grow to be very huge and even produce blooms if properly cared for.

Promising Review:

This plant looks as close to real as you can get. Soft leaves so it will not hurt fish. Nice addition to my Cichlid tank!

Java Fern Potted

Mid-ground plant

price from
$13.99
Our Opinion:

Java fern is a lovely background or mid-ground plant that is resistant to goldfish attacks due to its thick, fibrous leaves. Its dense, leafy structure provides protection and is enjoyable to swim through for your fish. Java fern does not need much in the way of light or fertilizer, and it may readily adhere to wood or rocks without the use of a substrate.

Promising Review:

Definitely hardy. Has survived in goldfish tank for several months now. Happy customer.

Mainam
Anubias Barteri

Low-light species plant

price from
$15.99
Our Opinion:

Anubias is another low-maintenance plant with sturdy leaves that can be planted on rock or driftwood. Most goldfish keepers' favorite plant is probably this one since it tends to be left alone nearly fully and doesn't mind being maintained in an aquarium that isn't dedicated to cultivating plants. It's a low-light species that needs very little care and will thrive as long as its leaves aren't covered with algae.

Promising Review:

These plants are gorgeous and by far, the healthiest aquatic plants I have yet to receive!! The seller is awesome and really cares about providing excellent customer service!! You will not be disappointed, purchasing from them! Fast shipping, excellent packaging and healthy, vibrant plants!!! Highly recommended!!

Aquatic Arts Java Fern - Best Aquatic Plants for Goldfish: Hard leaves plant
https://www.amazon.com/

Aquatic Arts
Java Fern

Hard leaves plant

price from
$9.99
Our Opinion:

We love Java fern for goldfish aquariums since the hard leaves don't appear to bother the goldfish. It's been said that they just don't taste good and that the texture isn't helping matters. The Java fern cannot grow in the substrate and must be attached to permeable rock or driftwood in order to thrive. If you leave your goldfish tank bare-bottomed, this comes in handy since no substrate is required.

Promising Review:

Came alive and green. It did have a lot of seeds growing on it but I just washed them off with my fingers which was easy enough. The roots make a nice wide base which makes it really easy to plant.

Cryptocorynes Wendtii Red

Easy to maintain plant

price from
$3.45
Our Opinion:

Cryptocoryne wendtii (often known as ‘Crypt') need substrate to flourish, unlike Java fern and Anubias. As goldfish like digging and uprooting plants, this makes it a slightly riskier option. Still, since its leaves seem to be left alone most of the time, it's a fantastic option for your goldfish tank. Cryptocoryne, like most of the other plants on this list, is low-maintenance and easy to maintain.

Conclusion

You can acquire a variety of cool plants for your fish tank (this is our top pick). If you have a bigger tank, don't be frightened to experiment with different types of fish. In general, the more plants you have, the better—if space allows. Your fish will like having plants in their aquarium, so get some for them!
